Jews first settled in Charleston in 1695, establishing one of the first ongoing synagogues in the New World. In colonial times, Charleston was the largest Jewish community in the country. Synagogue Emanu-El was founded in this historic Jewish community in 1947, the first Conservative congregation in South Carolina, an affiliate of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We are a modern Conservative congregation that emphasizes the continuity of Jewish traditions while being responsive to the challenges of a changing world. We are committed to fostering a community of learning and caring... Our synagogue celebrated its 75th anniversary in October 2022, and we have been located at our current address since 1980.
