  • JRH 's Business Manager
In 1983, Sue Philipp, JRH's Business Manager, began a journey with the retreat house that has lasted 30 years. She moved to the Oshkosh area with her family that year and didn't realize a major change was coming her way. Sue's mother, who was employed at JRH as a cook and housekeeper, knew that her daughter was looking for work and suggested that she apply at the retreat house. According to Sue, "I had never heard of the Jesuit Retreat House but found out it was very close to my new home and that it was an "inn" of sorts. My maiden name in German means innkeeper so it seemed quite fitting to me that I work at an "inn". I drove over, met with Fr. Gladstone, SJ the director at that time, applied for the job, and he hired me on the spot. My new journey as a JRH employee started the following day." During her first 6 years, Sue worked as a part time housekeeper, laundry person and dining room server as well as helping out in maintenance and dabbling in the JRH gardens. In 1989, Director Fr. Jack Rainaldo, SJ asked if Sue would consider taking the fulltime bookkeeper position. Sue recounts, "I accepted the position and started work as the bookkeeper but the job kept evolving and over time I was asked to manage the main office, HR matters, payroll, the IT system, supervise housekeeping and assist the Director in administration." During her 30 years, Sue has seen staff and program changes as well as many remodeling and construction projects. All of these changes have enhanced the prayerful environment and created additional sacred space to welcome home retreatants each year to JRH. "I am excited about the future of JRH and I'm looking forward to helping to create new memories here on this holy ground."
