Allison D. Tuttle

Allison Tuttle is the Chief Zoological Officer at Mystic Aquarium where she oversees the Aquarium's veterinary, animal husbandry, dive, environmental quality, and animal rescue operations. She contributes to numerous research and grant initiatives and has authored nearly 30 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals. Tuttle serves as a mentor for students and veterinary interns. Within the community, Tuttle has been recognized as a Woman of Innovation and with a 40 Under 40 award. Tuttle serves a co-chair, board member, and member on numerous animal, aquarium, and zoological committees and she is the president elect on the Executive Committee within the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians. Tuttle earned her B.S. in Biology and Psychology from Washington College and her DVM from North Carolina State University. She completed Mystic Aquarium's internship in Aquatic Animal Medicine and Research and completed a residency in Zoological Medicine with a focus on Aquatic Health Management at North Carolina State University.

Amy Apprill

Amy Apprill is a marine microbial ecologist leading the Microbial Ecology for Ocean Conservation research program at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. She received her bachelor's in Marine Sciences from the University of San Diego in 2001, and master's and doctorate degrees in Biological Oceanography from the University of Hawaii in 2004 and 2009. Apprill's research seeks to understand the ecology of microbiomes that live in sensitive animal hosts and ecosystems of the ocean. She is interested in what drives microbial growth, interactions, and cycles within these environments and studies the microbes' functions and contributions to the health of their host or ecosystem to determine if their microbial partners can be signatures for health or environmental changes.

Aran Mooney

Aran Mooney is a marine biologist focusing on the sensory biology of marine organisms. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire and a MS and PhD from the University of Hawaii in Zoology with a Marine Biology emphasis. Mooney's research focuses on sensory biology, particularly how marine animals use and are affected by sound. This involves determining the effects of increasing anthropogenic noise on dolphins and whales, assessing means of reducing marine mammal by-catch and depredation, measuring hearing and effects of noise with marine mammals and developing new sensors to measure sound production, biodiversity, and animal behaviors.

Rodney Daniels is a customer service leader who partners with department leaders and staff to enhance the guest experience, drive revenue, and reduce costs. After spending nearly 25 years working in customer service and operations for multimillion-dollar aquariums and zoos, Daniels knows that what truly drives the guest experience is how well you connect with the heart-beating people you're trying to educate and entertain. Daniels honed his skills as a leader in customer service, theater operations, event production, retail operations, and security at Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans and Dallas Zoo. He successfully reopened a major attraction after Hurricane Katrina, created a business plan resulting in over $1 million in revenue and reduced hard costs by just under $1 million. Daniels has served on the board for the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana and was a committee member for Giant Screen Cinema Association. As the Vice President of Guest Experience at Mystic Aquarium, Daniels manages guest services; interpretation; membership sales and services; and all retail, food, and beverage partnerships. Danielle graduated from Roger Williams University with a BS in Marine Biology where she studied the growth rate of juvenile oysters. She was also a NOAA Hollings fellow, where she investigated the respiratory physiology of clearnose skates and summer flounder in response to coastal climate change. She received her Master's degree in Marine Biology from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, in which her thesis focused on the temperature tolerance of a parasite invasive to American eels. She also developed a non-lethal detection method for this parasite using digital X-ray technology. She is currently a Research Technician at Mystic Aquarium and is involved in a number of research projects as well as conservation and education initiatives.

David Gruber

David Gruber completed his doctorate in Biological Oceanography from the Rutgers University Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences in 2007, and holds master's degrees in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University and Journalism from Columbia University. His research pertains to marine microbial ecology and fluorescent proteins on coral reefs and he uses remote operated vehicles (ROVs) and extended-range scuba to examine marine natural products, fluorescent proteins and bioluminescence on coral reefs. In collaboration with fellow scientist-in-residence Vincent Pieribone, Gruber has utilized animals in the Mystic Aquarium collection for imaging fluorescence.

Dr. Ebru Unal

Dr. Ebru Unal joined the Mystic Aquarium research team in 2014. She works on using molecular techniques to assess health and immune status in marine mammals. Unal majored in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Bogazici University in Turkey and received her MSc degree in Marine Sciences at Middle East Technical University in Turkey. During her master's studies, she focused on zooplankton seasonality and genetics. Her work earned her a fellowship from the University of Washington to serve as a visiting research scientist at the School of Oceanography, where she carried out a population genetic study on copepod species. In 2011, Unal earned her PhD in Oceanography from the University of Connecticut (UConn). Her main research focus during her PhD studies was on molecular responses of marine zooplankton to environmental conditions and stressors in the North Atlantic Ocean. Unal was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Marine Sciences at UConn until 2013, and was later named an Assistant Research Scientist in the UConn Marine Sciences and Technology Center. During her research career, Unal has utilized population genetics, gene expression profiling, transcriptomic, and functional genomic approaches. At the Aquarium, she is currently working on investigating the genome-wide gene expression responses of marine mammals to various environmental and anthropogenic stressors. She is also working on developing methodologies for environmental DNA (eDNA) detection for marine mammals and sea turtles.

Dr. Peter Auster

Dr. Peter Auster joined Mystic Aquarium as a senior research scientist in 2011. He is a marine ecologist, and his work focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in the ocean. Although retired from the University of Connecticut, he retains a faculty appointment as a Research Professor Emeritus in the Department of Marine Sciences and has ongoing projects there. For the past 40 years, Auster has conducted studies to understand how the behavior of marine fishes and the dynamics in patterns of habitat use influence their distribution and abundance across underwater landscapes. From an applied science perspective, his most notable work has focused on understanding the ecological effects of fishing and on developing a scientific basis for using marine protected areas as a conservation tool. Auster has led many shore-based projects and has served as a scientist or chief scientist on more than 60 major research cruises in the northwest Atlantic, Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean, South China Sea, Gulf of California and equatorial Pacific. This fieldwork, which has utilized scuba techniques, research submersibles and remotely operated vehicles, has resulted in more than 140 scholarly and technical publications. Auster serves on multiple panels and committees that are focused on marine resource management and conservation and has been involved in numerous outreach initiatives targeted at informing the public about marine conservation issues. Among numerous forms of professional recognition, Auster is a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation, was elected a Fellow in the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists, and was the Mote Eminent Scholar in Fisheries Ecology at Florida State University during the 2010-11 academic year. He also has received a NOAA Environmental Hero Award, a NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries Outstanding Volunteer Service Award and a University of Connecticut at Avery Point Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Leading the Mystic Aquarium research team is Dr. Tracy Romano, the founder of the field of marine mammal neuroimmunology and leader in the field of marine mammal health. Romano graduated with a BS in Biology from Saint Michael's College in Vermont and received her PhD in Neurobiology & Anatomy from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. While a graduate student, Romano spent her summers studying with the U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program in San Diego and investigating neural-immune interactions in the beluga whale. Her postdoctoral work built upon this research to investigate the marine mammal immune system and the impact of stress and the environment on marine mammal health, in collaboration with the Marine Mammal Program and The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. After her postdoctoral studies, Romano established a research laboratory focused on studying stress and the marine mammal immune system at the Navy Base in San Diego. In 2004, Romano moved her lab to Mystic Aquarium and is currently the Vice President of Research and Veterinary Services, where she leads a research team focused on aquatic animal health and conservation biology. Among numerous forms of professional recognition, Romano has been an inductee into the Saint Michael's College Academic Hall of Fame, an American Society for Engineering Education Fellow, a finalist for the Connecticut Technology Council's Women of Innovation award and a National Research Council Fellow. She serves on multiple scientific advisory panels, was President of the International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine, has mentored many award-winning students, has created and conducted a nationally recognized science education and cultural exchange program for Native American youth, has led over 15 field expeditions to the Arctic, holds joint appointments at multiple universities and has made significant scientific contributions to the field of aquatic animal health.

Greg Marshall

Greg Marshall has partnered with Mystic Aquarium in research, education, and outreach. He is the inventor of the National Geographic Crittercam, a small, lightweight camera that has the remarkable ability to travel unobtrusively with its animal hosts to capture never-before-seen footage of the hidden lives of wild animals, and he participated in a "proof of concept" study on using Crittercam with the beluga whales at Mystic Aquarium. He then traveled to Point Lay, Alaska, to launch Crittercam on wild belugas. He also partnered with the aquarium on a research project that utilized Crittercam to study the behavior of snapping turtles, complementing health assessments of turtles in different environments. In addition, Marshall helped launch the snapping turtle research and education program and the National Geographic Crittercam exhibit at the aquarium, and he and was a featured speaker in Mystic Aquarium's Conservation in Action series.

Gregory Skomal

Gregory Skomal is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer, aquarist and author. He holds a master's degree from the University of Rhode Island and a doctorate from Boston University. Skomal has been a senior fisheries biologist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries since 1987 and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program. For more than 35 years, he has studied life history, ecology and physiology of sharks and his research has spanned the globe from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to coral reefs in the tropical Central Pacific. Much of Skomal's current research centers on the use of acoustic telemetry, satellite-based technology and animal-borne imaging to examine movement ecology and behavior of white sharks.

Jason Mancini holds a doctorate degree in Anthropology from University of Connecticut (UConn) and has expertise in the archaeology and ethnohistory of New England. Mancini is the founder and director of the Indian Mariners Project, a collaboration between multiple tribes, institutions and individuals that explores the history of and ongoing relationship between Native people and the sea. Justin Richard has been involved at Mystic Aquarium since 1999 when he began as an exhibit educator volunteer. He completed two husbandry internships at the aquarium. After graduating from Connecticut College, Richard was hired as a beluga whale trainer at the aquarium. In 2011, Richard received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research fellowship and completed his doctorate degree in Integrative and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Rhode Island (URI), in collaboration with Mystic Aquarium. His research focuses on using minimally invasive techniques, such as behavioral observations, ultrasound, and the analysis of exhale samples, to improve our understanding of beluga whale reproductive biology and to develop tools that will allow researchers to effectively monitor wild beluga populations.

Katie Cubina

Katie Cubina oversees the mission-based initiatives at Mystic Aquarium, bringing together STEM and environmental education, youth development, research, exhibits, and ocean policy under the banner of conservation. With more than 25 years in the not-for-profit sector and 17 years of aquarium-related experience, Cubina is committed to creating a more inclusive and sustainable future where wildlife, ecosystems, and people thrive together. Adept at building strategic public-private partnerships and securing funds to advance the Aquarium's mission, Cubina serves as the project director on multiple federal grants and contracts, including a $2.5-million STEM mentoring initiative that engages thousands of vulnerable youth in over 60 communities nationwide. Cubina ensures that the Aquarium's conservation-focused research activities inform management and policy decisions at the local, regional, and national levels. She currently co-chairs the Aquarium Conservation Partnership, a coalition of 27 accredited aquariums working to conserve marine and freshwater ecosystems and committed to just and sustainable practices. Cubina holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Oberlin College and a M.Ed. in Science and Environmental Education from the University of Maine.

Keith Sorensen

Keith Sorensen has been a member of Mystic Aquarium's team for 49 years. He was the first person hired by the maintenance department several months before Mystic Aquarium opened its doors on October 6, 1973. Sorenson's first job was creating infrastructure for exhibits. From his initial project to his current responsibilities, Sorenson has been instrumental in the planning and construction of the Aquarium's major exhibits like the Pacific Northwest, Arctic Coast, Ocean Conservation Center and most recently the Milne Ocean Science and Conservation Center. Currently, Sorenson oversees facility maintenance, HVAC systems, and, safety and security.

Kelly Matis serves as vice president of Education & Conservation, a role she has held at Mystic Aquarium for over 12 years. Koray Gurz has extensive financial leadership experience, and he applies his knowledge of investments, banking, finance, and taxation, along with other strategic initiatives, to Mystic Aquarium's financial management, organizational goals, and execution of mission programs. Gurz began his career at a public accounting firm. Throughout his career, he has performed financial statement audits and reviews of companies in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). He specialized in the non-profit industry before transferring his skills to the financial management of a non-profit educational organization, overseeing all financials, departmental budgets, general accounting, and legal agreements. As Mystic Aquarium's CFO and COO, Gurz directs, coordinates, and evaluates various financial functions operated by his team of banking and finance professionals. He is responsible for the financial management of the organization, which includes budget development, oversight of financial control, and collaboration with lenders and other stakeholders, all while participating in strategic and operational management. Gurz holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Dokuz Eylul University in Turkey, and an MBA from the University of Hartford. Laura Thompson

Laura Thompson is a research scientist at Mystic Aquarium. In this role, she is studying the relationship between the immune system, diving, and dive-related injury in marine mammals; investigating the hypothesis that a less-sensitive immune response helps marine mammals avoid the bends; and trying to understand the conditions that may lead to dive-related injury and disease. Thompson first came to Mystic Aquarium as a research intern during the summer of 2005, working on the identification and quantification of lymphocyte subsets in wild bottlenose dolphins. Thompson holds a first-class BSc with honors in Marine and Freshwater Biology from the University of London and obtained her PhD in Oceanography from the University of Connecticut (UConn), where she was the first graduate student to complete her degree through a partnership between Mystic Aquarium and UConn's Marine Science Department at Avery Point. Her main research interest is marine mammal dive physiology and health, including the role of the immune system in the development of dive-related injury and disease. She has travelled to Alaska for health assessments of wild belugas, and has participated in health assessment sampling of grey seals on Monomoy Island, Massachusetts. Thompson is also involved in the development of non-invasive sampling techniques, and has validated a method to collect samples of respiratory vapor, or "blow," from belugas, in order to measure changes in cortisol, and other markers of health, both in animals at Mystic Aquarium as well as in the field.

Manuel Castellote

Manuel Castellote's primary focus and expertise is in marine mammal acoustics and response to anthropogenic noise. He earned his bachelor's degree in Zoology and doctorate in Psychobiology in Madrid, Spain. His main interest is using acoustics as a tool to improve the knowledge of behavioral ecology of marine mammals for their conservation. He is also interested in the effect of anthropogenic noise in marine mammal communication and is involved in development of noise regulation for National Marine Fisheries Service and the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Norman Wainwright has been working on the primitive innate immune system found in the American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) for almost 30 years. Most recently, he has directed research and new product development at Charles River Laboratories, a major manufacturer of the bacterial endotoxin test (LAL) derived from the blood cells of the horseshoe crab. LAL is an ultra-sensitive enzyme cascade, adapted from the immune response of the crab to bacterial infection. His recent research involves a continued interest conserving species of horseshoe crabs around the world as well as studying the molecular biology of marine invertebrates. Paul Anderson

Paul Anderson is the founder of the Coral Reef Aquarium Fisheries Campaign, a multi-stakeholder initiative to conserve the biodiversity of coral reefs while preserving the livelihoods of people dependent on them across the global value chain. Paul Turner obtained a B.A. in Biology from University of Rochester and a PhD in Microbial Evolution from Michigan State University. He joined Yale University in 2001, where he serves as director of the Center for Phage Biology and Therapy and directs Yale University's Quantitative Biology Institute. Turner studies evolutionary genetics of viruses, particularly phages (bacteria-specific viruses) that infect bacterial pathogens and RNA viruses transmitted by mosquitoes, and researches the use of phages to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial diseases. Susan Smith joined Mystic Aquarium's research team in fall, 2022, where she studies the diversity and function of marine mammal microbiomes. Smith received a master's and doctoral degree in Oceanography from University of Connecticut (UConn) studying marine microbes. Her dissertation includes publication of the first tintinnid ciliate genome, the elucidation of ciliate genome architecture, and the taxonomic description of a new ciliate genus and species discovered in Long Island Sound. Her more recent work involves the use of single-cell genomics and transcriptomics to study the structure of marine protist genomes and an adaptation of these methods to characterize cryptic taxa at a species level. Smith has a passion for teaching and enjoyed her time instructing the UConn graduate course Biological Oceanography, as well as mentoring students in the Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) program. Her current interests involve the use of contemporary molecular methods to characterize the prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbiomes of marine mammals. Smith believes that a fine-tuned genetic characterization of host microbiota can inform animal husbandry specialists on the transmission of parasites, serve as early warning health indices, and elucidate population genetics and community structure in wild populations.

Tina Couch

Tina Couch has a demonstrated history of successful fundraising work in primary and secondary education. She joins the Aquarium after spending 15 years working in independent schools as a development professional. Couch has held a variety of leadership roles, most recently as Director of Development at Rumsey Hall School in Connecticut. Prior to that, she spent a decade as the Director of Major Gifts at Collegiate School in New York City. In 2018, she completed a historic $250M building project that required a $90M capital fund raise. Couch is skilled in Nonprofit Organizations, Major Gifts, Annual Giving, Philanthropy, Governance and Strategic Planning. As the Chief Advancement Officer, Couch is responsible for raising revenue for operations and capital projects by designing and implementing a comprehensive plan for cultivating and realizing philanthropic support. She serves as a key member of the senior leadership team and is an active participant in the Aquarium's strategic decisions.

Vincent Pieribone

Vincent Pieribone's current research includes developing genetically encoded fluorescent probes of membrane electrical potential to monitor the electrical activity of neurons. He has also engineered miniature imaging systems that can be head-mounted on mammals to allow mobile recording of neuronal activity and helped to create and design the fluorescent coral exhibit in the William E. Kelley gallery and has photographed aquarium animals for education and outreach purposes in collaboration with fellow scientist-in-residence David Gruber.
