Carl Palumbo

Carl Palumbo, M.D. is a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in sports medicine and conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Dr. Palumbo is one of the only physicians in Houston who is Board Certified in both Hand/Upper Extremity surgery and sports medicine. This unique combination of sub-specialties has allowed Dr. Palumbo to excel in the diagnosis and treatment of upper extremity injuries/conditions in both the regular population as well as in the athlete. A native of California and the son of an Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Palumbo's interest in Orthopedics started at an early age. He attended UCLA where he received his B.S. in Molecular Biology, graduating with honors. He completed medical school in New Orleans at Tulane University, where he graduated within the top 10 in his class. He was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in which he remains very active. Dr. Palumbo completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at UC Davis Medical Center in California, followed by a one year fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the internationally recognized, Indiana Hand and Shoulder Center. Dr. Palumbo is a member of various professional societies: American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons American Society for Surgery of the Hand American Medical Association Texas Medical Association Harris County Medical Society Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society Dr. Palumbo has participated in numerous presentations to surgical societies, medical conferences, athletic training/coaching seminars, and more. He has published articles in peer review journals and has authored several book chapters in his specialty. Dr. Palumbo's passion and dedication to medicine are also reflected in his own pursuit of physical fitness. As a sub- 3 hour marathoner and a competitive triathlete, he has participated in many events across the United States including the Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon, Houston Marathon, Vineman 70.3 Ironman Triathlon and Texas Ironman Triathlon, to name a few. As the father to three active boys, Dr. Palumbo is heavily involved in youth sports. He has coached many sports including baseball, soccer, football and basketball. He continues to volunteer his time by coaching, lecturing and consulting with various youth sports organizations in the Greater Houston area. Dr. Mark Adickes, an Orthopedic surgeon serving Houston, TX & nearby areas, was raised all over the world as the son of an Army chaplain. He attended high school in Berlin and Munich Germany and graduated from Killeen high school in central Texas where his father was stationed at Fort Hood. Dr. Adickes excelled in sports and received a football scholarship to attend Baylor University. At Baylor, he appeared in three bowl games and in his senior year he was the team captain and honored as a first-team All-American. He received a BBA in management and marketing upon his graduation from Baylor. Football was career number one for Dr. Adickes after being drafted in the first round by both the NFL and the USFL. He played 2 years with the LA Express in the USFL protecting quarterback Steve Young, followed by four seasons with Kansas City Chiefs and three more with the Washington Redskins. His professional football career culminated with a Super Bowl Championship with the Washington Redskins. Numerous injuries, surgeries and rehabilitations led to the conception of Dr. Mark Adickes' second career choice as an orthopedic surgeon. He attended George Mason University in northern Virginia to complete his pre-med studies and was accepted to Harvard Medical School. Dr. Adickes medical school experience was enhanced by his selection to deliver the commencement address at graduation. He then attended an orthopedic surgery residency program at the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Upon completion of his orthopedic surgery residency, he was honored by being offered a fellowship position at the renowned Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, CO. His fellowship included extensive training in the treatment of knee, shoulder & hip injuries. As a Houston orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Adickes' ultimate goal is to heal, and he approaches every patient with a curious mind and a dogged determination to achieve that goal. He often tells his patients, "I will treat your problem as if it were my own or that of a family member." When seeking treatment from an orthopedic surgeon for an injury, one cannot ask for more.

Juan Bustos M.D. is an orthopedic surgeon with dual board certification in general orthopedics and sports medicine. He specializes in sports medicine injuries of the knee and shoulder, fractures, and general orthopedics. Doctor Bustos received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he graduated with honors. He went on to medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit where he was elected to the AOA honor society. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati where he was distinguished as a future leader in the field of orthopedics by the distinguished American Orthopedic Association. His research on SLAP tears was presented and published nationally. Doctor Bustos completed his training with a fellowship in sports medicine at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University. His published research here focused on disorders of the patella and patellofemoral instability. Doctor Bustos has cared for athletes at all levels of competition from professional to recreational athletes. His approach is always patient focused and with the intent for full return to pre injury level. As an avid cyclist and swimmer he understands the needs of active individuals. He is married with three boys and lives in the memorial area.

Mark Provenzano, M.D. is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, and knee and shoulder surgery. In addition to certification by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Provenzano has a sub-specialty certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine, having met educational, surgical experience, clinical practice, and testing requirements. He continues to be re-certified on a regular basis. A native Houstonian, Dr. Provenzano graduated from Rice University with a B.A. in biology and psychology. In addition to his premedical work, he also performed research in the biomechanics of sports techniques as well as the psychology of sports competition. He graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, finishing in the top 10 of his class in just three years. Dr. Provenzano completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by an orthopedic surgery residency at the same institution. He received the Harrington Award for excellence in orthopedic surgery while serving as Chief Resident. Dr. Provenzano has a long interest in medicine, having worked as an operating room orderly in his youth, as well as working as an operating room technician while attending college and medical school. He has participated in the development of arthroscopic techniques including basic research, instrument development, and procedure modifications, especially involving ACL knee reconstructive surgery and arthroscopic shoulder surgery. An avid community member, Dr. Provenzano has volunteered his services across outreach programs, the Shriner's Hospital for Cripple Children, and is a former President of the Gulf Coast Regional Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Key to his philosophy, Dr. Provenzano tries to understand and appreciate the extreme amount of work and dedication that goes into athletic excellence. By the same token, he understands the heartbreak and devastation that can occur as a result of injury, and takes it as his own personal challenge to bring back the athlete not only to their pre-injury state, but better. His philosophy is also reflected in his lifestyle, having a varied and diverse interest in many athletic endeavors. Dr. Provenzano is a veteran of over 25 marathons, having completed the Abbott World Marathon Majors (Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin, & Tokyo marathons). He has a top 10 divisional finish in the Houston Marathon, and recently completed the Lavaman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys skiing in the winter, and especially fly fishing in the summer. Dr. Provenzano is the founding member of The Orthopedic Sports Clinic, and has been instrumental in developing a full-service sports clinic, encompassing elite certified surgeons, experienced certified rehabilitation specialists, certified physician assistants, diagnostics including digital x-ray and MRI, all on site. The clinic is adjacent to West Houston Surgicare, an affiliate of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, where outpatient surgery is performed. Dr. Provenzano is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a member of multiple professional societies at the local, state, and national level.
