Shepherds Fire-Rescue strives to meet or exceed state and national firefighting, training, and safety standards through continued education, policy implementation, and equipment acquisition. The department's current policy states that new volunteers should obtain state certification within two years of membership. This training is a total of 550 hours, which includes Firefighter I & II certification, Hazardous Materials Responder, and Emergency Medical Technician - Basic. This certification is obtained through classes funded by the North Carolina Community College System. North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission certification is designed to exceed the NFPA 1001 standard.
