John Lam

John Lam was appointed in 2008 as the fifth bandmaster of the Canadian Staff Band. A passionate music educator, John has enjoyed his career teaching instrumental music for the Thames Valley District School Board. He is currently Head of Performing Arts at Glendale High School in Tillsonburg, Ontario. John enjoys teaching at numerous music camps for the Salvation Army.

Paul Carew

Paul is the Leadership Development Secretary for The Salvation Army - Canada and Bermuda Territory. His tireless work with The Salvation Army has focused on creating and implementing a Leadership Development strategy to address the territory's significant leadership needs. Prior to joining TSA in 2017, Paul spent more than 32 years in public education in Ontario, with more than 15 years as Vice Principal and Principal at several schools for the York Region District School Board. Paul became Superintendent of Education for the YRDSB in 2013 where he supervised schools in the Stouffville and Newmarket areas and helped in teacher staffing and elementary collective bargaining. Paul is an internal facilitator with LEADS Canada for TSA and has shared his leadership expertise across the territory. Paul is an active Salvationist. He's been a member of the Ministry Board and has served as Bandmaster and Young People's Sergeant Major at the North Toronto Community Church. Family, travel, music and golf occupy his spare time.

Phil Wakeford

Phil spent nearly ten years supporting young parents with their education and employment goals at The Salvation Army Bethany Hope Centre in Ottawa and he now brings that support for learners with him to the Leadership Development Team. He's excited for the opportunity to work more widely with officers and staff from across the territory. Before arriving at TSA, Phil completed his M.A. in Religion and earned his Bachelor's in Education. While working as a frontline staff member, Phil also worked in online and traditional classrooms with the local school board and a private online education institution. His students have been mostly adult learners, and the challenges faced by TSA clients in particular motivated Phil to pursue special teacher training in adult education, guidance, teaching English language learners, and online learning design and delivery.

Scott Yake

With 31 of experience throughout the Ontario public education system, Scott has brought exceptional organizational tools and strategies to The Salvation Army's Leadership Development team since joining January 2021. As the Learning and Development Strategist, he is an integral part of creating practice-focused, relational, cohesive and inclusive training and education opportunities in the Army. Scott started his career in public education as a teacher, working his way up to Principal, Superintendent, and eventually Associate Director in Ontario's third largest school board. His willingness to lead and empower diverse teams at both the school and system levels has impacted countless areas of public education - Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, School Operations, Human Resources, Labour Relations, and Leadership Development - and it's what makes him the perfect fit for TSA. Scott also brings with him special expertise from his two years spent as a Special Advisor for the Ministry of Education in Ontario, including pandemic management and labour negotiations.
