Dr. Sharma is a basic and translational medical scientist with a background in immunology, cell biology, molecular biology and pulmonary physiology. He joined UF in June 2018 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery. Prior to joining UF, Dr. Sharma was a faculty member in Department of Surgery at University of Virginia since 2004. He received his PhD from University of Virginia and completed his medical graduation from MR Medical College, Gulbarga, India. The research in Dr. Sharma's laboratory focuses on defining the molecular and signal transduction mechanisms of acute lung injury (i.e. ischemia-reperfusion injury or primary graft dysfunction) after lung transplantation as well as investigating the pathophysiology of aortic aneurysms. The main focus of his research is to decipher the contribution of purinergic signaling via pannexin and transient receptor potential channels as well as to implement mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles as a therapeutic strategy in aortic aneurysms and primary graft dysfunction after lung transplantation. He has served as a peer-reviewer for numerous scientific journals. He is an active member of the American Thoracic Society, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the American Heart Association. He has regularly served as a reviewer for National Institute of Health as well as international research organizations (United Kingdom and Switzerland). Dr. Sharma has given guest lectures at various academic institutions and serves as editor and reviewer for peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr. Sharma has a strong history in the teaching and research training of surgery residents, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students and undergraduate students.

Martin Rosenthal

Martin Rosenthal, M.D., joins division of acute care surgery Martin Rosenthal, M.D., has joined the University of Florida College of Medicine as an assistant professor in the division of acute care surgery. Rosenthal earned his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. He completed a general surgery residency and a fellowship in critical care medicine at UF. His post-graduate surgical training also includes nutrition fellowships at Louisville University and Oregon Health and Science University. Rosenthal is also board-certified in surgical critical care. He is a member of several professional and medical organizations, including the Florida Chapter of American Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, the American Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Florida Chapter of American College of Surgeons, the Florida Committee on Trauma and the American College of Surgeons. Rosenthal also served as an ad hoc reviewer for the journal PLOS One. He has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and chapters in medical textbooks.

Michol A. Cooper, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor in the division of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Cooper earned her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University, where she completed her studies as the youngest graduate in her class at the age of 17. She then went on to complete her master's of science degree and doctorate degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan, where her research team was among the pioneers in the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound for treatment of soft tissue tumors. After completing her PhD, she earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. She then completed general surgery residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where she also served as chief resident. Subsequently, she completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University. Dr. Cooper is board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery through the American Board of Surgery. She has contributed to over 20 research publications covering topics, including robotic surgery, patient perceptions and tissue damage. Scott Robinson, MD is an assistant professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Robinson earned his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude from Union College in Schenectady, NY and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University. He earned his MD from Emory University School of Medicine. Most recently, he completed an integrated Vascular Surgery residency at the University of Michigan. During his residency he also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the National University of Ireland Galway. Among other honors, Dr. Robinson has been awarded the Greenfield Research Award at the University of Michigan and a seed grant from the American Medical Association. He also served as an EDGE - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research (AMBER) Center in Galway, Ireland from 2017 to 2019. Dr. Robinson's clinical interests encompass a broad spectrum of vascular disease including abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, and cerebrovascular disease. His research interests include development of biomaterials and drug delivery systems for treatment of various arterial and venous pathologies. Dr. Robinson is a member of the Association of Academic Surgery, the American Heart Association, the Society for Vascular Surgery the American College of Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Robinson also has an interest in innovation and commercialization of medical devices and has submitted several patents.

Thomas S. Huber

Thomas S. Huber, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He also serves as vice chairman of the department of surgery, for which he has served as a faculty member for more than 17 years. Dr. Huber earned his medical degree and doctorate in physiology at the University of Michigan, where he also completed his surgical residency and vascular fellowship training. His clinical interests include aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial occlusive disease and hemodialysis access. Dr. Huber's research focuses on improving the success rates of fistulas for hemodialysis access. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, he is leading a team of physicians, surgeons and scientists at UF who are partnering with five other institutions from across the country to study fistula outcomes. Together they are working to outline practice patterns and create surgical guidelines with the aim of increasing the number of successful fistula procedures. He has published and presented extensively, as well as has served as a peer reviewer for numerous journals. He currently sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Yearbook of Surgery. Dr. Huber is committed to educating the next generation of vascular surgeons and serves as the UF vascular surgery fellowship program director. His awards include induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, recognition as a distinguished reviewer of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, and recipient of the Key Award for Outstanding Clinical Service, the Edward M. Copeland Faculty Award, and the Lester R. Dragstedt Physician-Scientist Award.

My name is William Weir, MD, and I am a clinical assistant professor of thoracic surgery in the University of Florida Department of Surgery. I earned my medical degree and completed integrated thoracic surgery training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. During my final year of training, I served as the chief thoracic surgery resident. I completed a research fellowship at the University of Michigan Extracorporeal Life Support Laboratory, where I mastered Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, or ECMO, and led research teams in transplantation and ex-vivo organ perfusion. Subsequently in 2020, I completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Michigan, further mastering the advanced management of respiratory and multi-system organ failure. Additionally, I completed a fellowship in robotic thoracic surgery through the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. I specialize in advanced thoracic care, including minimally invasive thoracic surgery, lung and esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disease, lung transplantation for end-stage lung disease, ECMO and surgical critical care. My primary research interests include quality improvement, lung transplantation, and extracorporeal support. I am a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs.

Zain Shahid, M.D., is an assistant professor in the division of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He graduated with honors and was awarded a merit scholarship for being among the top 15% in his class. He started his general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He then moved to University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center where he completed his residency and also served as the chief resident. Subsequently, he completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Shahid's clinical interests include treatment of complex aortic aneurysms and dissections using fenestrated endografts. In addition, he treats patients with renal and mesenteric occlusive disease, cerebrovascular occlusive disease, peripheral vascular disease and hemodialysis access. Dr. Shahid is board certified in general surgery through the American Board of Surgery. Zhihua Jiang, MD, PhD is an associate professor with the Division of Vascular Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Jiang began his career at the University of Florida as a research assistant professor in the Department of surgery in 2006. In 2012, he became an assistant professor with the department and in 2021 received tenure as an associate professor. Dr. Jiang completed a general surgery residency at the Huaihua People's First Hospital in China, where he also was a resident fellow. He then received a PhD from Tongji Medical University in China. Following his PhD, Dr. Jiang became a chief resident at Guangxi Medical University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in vascular biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He has published several dozens of papers, book chapters and abstracts related to the vascular system and vascular surgery. Dr. Jiang has a passion for teaching future generations of medical professionals, as a teacher and mentor for many postdoctoral fellows, medical residents and undergraduates. He has won many awards including the Excellence Award for Assistant Professors and the Research Career Development Award, both from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Jiang's research interests include danger signals, particularly those triggered by damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), dysregulated adaptive immune responses and the impact of cytoskeleton deficiency on cell-signaling. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, and the American Heart Association where he is also a member of the Peripheral Vascular Disease Council and the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Council. Dr. Jiang is an avid researcher and has received a number of grants from the NIH and the Florida Department of Health to research various vascular surgery techniques and vascular disease.
