AMANDA WEHRWEIN

Job Titles:
  • Financial Aid Director
Amanda is BTI's Financial Aid Director. She works with incoming students to assist them in the process of developing a funding plan for their studies at BTI. She is dedicated to the "art of the possible" in helping students pursue their goals and dreams. Amanda comes to BTI with many years of financial aid experience with career colleges in the Phoenix area. She now resides in Raleigh, NC with her husband and daughter.

BEVERLY JOHNSON

Job Titles:
  • Lead Instructor for Massage Therapy
Beverly is a Lead Instructor for Massage Therapy I and II, and Professional Ethics & Massage Laws. She also serves as Faculty Development Specialist. Bev is a BTI graduate, NC LMBT (#928), ABMP member, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, certified in Reiki (Level II), and has completed leadership training with Strozzi Institute. Carey Smith

Job Titles:
  • Co - Director
Carey is a Co-director of BTI. She oversees the training and development of BTI's faculty, as well as the design and delivery of the curriculum for the Diploma Program. She has a bachelor's degree in romance languages from the University of Michigan, a teaching certificate from the American Montessori Society, certified in DansKinetics from Kripalu Institute, and a BTI graduate. Certified as a Master Somatic Coach by Strozzi Institute, and has a private coaching practice at BTI. Carey Smith is the co-director for the school. She began her work in the education field in 1978 with the Montessori Method of Childhood Education, and has provided teacher training, team-building and inspirational programs for both public and private schools. She has also been a keynote speaker at several national massage therapy education conferences. Carey specializes in curriculum design and in the creation of optimal educational environments. At BTI, she developed The Spirit of Learning® - a Teacher Certification Program for Massage, Somatic & Healthcare Educators. This work continues at BTI through the Center for Embodied Teacher Education, which Carey directs. Through her work with both teachers and students, she holds a vision of the inherent worth, dignity and originality of each person as they manifest their life's purpose. In addition, Carey brings her great love of gardening and landscape design to the campus at South Wind Farm - her way of nurturing the soul through the healing elements of nature. Carey has a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in romance literature and languages, as well as a teaching certificate from the American Montessori Society. She is a BTI graduate, is certified in DansKinetics from Kripalu Institute, and holds the designation of Master Somatic Coach from Strozzi Institute. She is the recipient of the 2009 Jerome Perlinski Teacher of the Year Award from the American Massage Therapy Association, and is a 2011 inductee into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame. Carey is also an accomplished artist and poet. Her first book was published in 2006, entitled Awakening Wisdom: Exploring the Confluence of Learning, Healing and Creativity. Carey and Rick are both contributing authors to TEACHING MASSAGE: Fundamental Principles in Adult Education for Massage Program Instructors, published in 2008 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

CAROL VERNER

Carol is Senior Lead Instructor for Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology & Pathology. She has a bachelor's degree in holistic studies from Norwich University, NC LMBT (#1301), ABMP member, Registered Craniosacral Therapist, Registered Yoga Teacher through the Yoga Alliance, studies in Body-Mind Centering and a Master Somatic Coach from Strozzi Institute. DOTTY FOLEY

Dotty is the Director of Student Services. She tracks and supports each student's academic progress through the program, and assists with post-graduate career planning and job placement. She has a bachelor's degree in special education from Southern Connecticut University and has 25 years of experience in special ed. JULIA CORLEY

Job Titles:

Julia is a Lead instructor for Somatic Psychology and Therapeutic Communication. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a Certified Hakomi Therapist and teacher for the Hakomi Institute. Graduate of the New Life Institute of Massage Excellence (Atlanta), NC LMBT (#2123), ABMP member, certified in Neuromuscular Therapy. Her private practice in Durham, NC focuses on somatic education, mindful touch, assisted self-discovery, and trauma resolution.

KAREN DELAHUNTY

Monica brings her many years of health care experience to her work at BTI, where she is dedicated to helping others take a positive step in their lives.

Rick Rosen - Founder

Rick is BTI's Founder and Co-director. In his role as Director of Marketing & Communications, he creates the educational and promotional materials that support BTI's mission and goals, and is also the school's liaison to professional organizations. He has a master's degree in psychology from West Georgia College, and a bachelor's degree in advertising from the University of Florida. Graduate of the Florida School of Massage, NC LMBT (#1), AMTA member; certified in body-centered psychotherapy and structural integration. Rick Rosen is the founder and co-director of the Body Therapy Institute. He is one of the nation's foremost massage educators, and has served as a leader and advocate for the massage therapy profession. From a background in visual communications, Rick began his work in the field of natural health in 1978. His training and experience span a wide range of therapeutic systems - which formed the basis for the integrative approach to massage therapy taught at BTI today. He was the founding chairman and a past member of the North Carolina Board of Massage & Bodywork Therapy, and was the first Executive Director of the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. More recently, he served as a founder and Executive Director of the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education, a national organization for massage schools, teachers and continuing education providers. Rick is a 2010 inductee into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame, was named as one of the Top 10 People in Integrative Medicine/Integrative Health Care in 2010, and received the AMTA National President's Award in 2013 - the association's highest honor in recognition of service to the profession. Rick has a master's degree in humanistic psychology from West Georgia College, and a bachelor's degree in advertising from the University of Florida. He is a graduate of the Florida School of Massage, is certified in body-centered psychotherapy by the Hakomi Institute, and is certified in structural integration.

SARAH DeBERARDINIS

SUSAN BOYD

Susan is an Administrative Assistant. She has an associate's degree in nursing, is a registered nurse with many years of experience in clinical care, a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association, and a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner. TERESA FLORA

Teresa is the BTI Administrator, and a strategic consultant to the Management Team. She is responsible for managing the school's financial systems and overall operations. She brings a wealth of experience to her position from the worlds of accounting and office systems management. Her attention to detail is surpassed only by her warmth and her dedication to service.

She has a bachelor's degree in English and theatre from Fontbonne University (St. Louis), is a BTI graduate, NC LMBT (#9681), and AMTA member. Former career in theatre arts; private practice in Durham, NC.
