James B. Campbell

The elder Mrs. Campbell and her youngest son James Berry Campbell moved from Tennessee to Washington Co AR, as memtioned in Goodspeed's Memoirs of Northwest Arkansas. They first settled in Pike County and later in Washington County. "I am the great granddaughter of Jarret Campbell, born in 1828 in Jackson Co Ark. (Civil war record) He was the son of Ephraim Campbell and Naomi... I can go back no further than a sheriff's census in Arkansas in 1829. Ephraim was there with a William and Jarrett. Brothers? or Father and two sons? Ephraim... died in 1843 and Naomi married a Nelson and was 44 in 1850. If he was 20 in 1828, then he would have been around 35 when he died. That would make his birth date around 1808."

It was to this home that John brought Jane Mitchell, after their marriage in 1811 in North Carolina. John's Tennessee household appears in census records through 1840. "Lillian Cash was the daughter of J.R. Cash and his first wife, Fannie A. Gilcrease or Gilchrist. Shortly after the birth of Lilian's brother, J.E. Cash, their mother died. Mr. Cash then married Nora Neighbors. I believe Lilian Cash and her siblings were cared for by Nora and J.R."

Mary Ellen Montgomery

"Dave Montgomery had been married before to Rhoda Hardage and had one son, Charles Hayden Montgomery, by her. Charles death certificate in CA gives his birth as 1870, but they did not marry until 1872. Later census makes him born around 1874, and I think that is more likely." (19)

Multiple John

Care is needed in interpreting records for men named John Orr in Tippah County, Mississippi. Two men with that name were there then: John A. Orr b. 1783 NC and John Jehu Orr b. 1786 NC. Some records published online inaccurately list Jane Mitchel as the wife of John Jehu Orr; his wife was another woman named Jane. The following outline, supplied by David Webb,(20) for the line of John Jehu Orr may help to distinguish the two John Orrs.

Myrtle Orr Smith

Myrtle Orr Smith worked for the food service department at Ouachita Baptist University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Lawrence Smith was employed at Cotton Oil Mills.

Nancy Ann Orr

Backrow: Nancy Ann Carter, her husband William Johnson Crow, and his children by a prior marriage

Nathan Orr

Nathan Orr, b. abt. 1842, John A. Orr's household of 1850 - if he were the child of John and Jane Orr, then he would have been a late-in-life love child. These four children may have originally been known by the surname of their father, but were listed in 1850 Federal census records for Tippah County, Mississippi, with the Orr surname simply due to their presence in the John Orr household. That argument, however, is weak, as John A. Orr's Tippah County household then includes John's grandchild with a Carter surname. A stronger argument may be that the four children were born outside of a marriage and assumed their mother's Orr surname.

Philip Gregory Thompson

Carolyng Beth Gregory Thompson was a pioneering woman in the field of antiques sales. She was the owner of Carolyn Thompson's Antique Center of Texas in Houston.

Robert W. Orr

An extensive DNA study involving numerous testers confirms that Robert Orr's father was Shannon from the line of John Alexander Shannon. The exact identity of Robert's father will never be known with 100% confidence. John Alexander Shannon is the most likely candidate based on a body of circumstantial evidence. His fate after 1860 is unknown. Robert Orr was an orphan initially raised in the household of his Orr grandparents in Mississippi. He grew up as a boarder/laborer in two different Arkansas households - the first headed by John L. Thornton, the second by Edward C. Hughes. Orr was later married to the widow of Edward Hughes. A farmer all of his life, Orr lived the last years of his life in the household of his son, Henry W. Orr. Robert Orr's death certificate lists his father as unknown, his mother as Betty (Orr) Carter, and his cause of death as old age insanity. H. W. Orr's household included Robert W. Orr (age 79, born AR, his father born AR, his mother born AR). Robert W. Orr, head of household, age 69, born MS, his father born MS, his mother born MS Per 19th Century protocol, Robert Orr, as a child born outside of a marriage, took the surname of his mother.

Sally C. Orr

Sally C. Orr, b. 1826, John A. Orr's household of 1840 and 1850. Sally does not correspond perfectly to a census age bracket in John's 1830 household; she may have been one of two daughters listed in the next older age bracket (a disparity of only a few years).

Sample Orr

Sample Orr, b. 1793, who married Susan Parrott, moved several times. Destinations included Pendelton County, South Carolina (1820); Lafayette County Alabama (1830-40); Pontotoc County, Miss., and finally Hunt/Hopkins Counties, Texas. This Sample Orr appears in the 1850 census for Pontotoc Co MS, as follows:

Sarah Bartram James

Sarah Bartram James studied at the University of Houston and worked at Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas. Paul James worked as an electrician at St Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Thomas Jefferson Carter

Another model works with William Levi Carter's presence in 1836 in Jackson County, Tennessee. This model suggests that he may have been the son of William Carter, who appears in the 1820 census of Jackson County, Tennessee, with three sons under the age of 10. In addition, William Levi Carter may have been part of the Shannon/Carter horse theft consortioum, which, per Orr family legend, operated between Jackson County, Tennessee, and the Arkansas-Texas border.

William L. Carter

Some researchers hold that William Levi Carter was the son of Henry Newton Carter and the grandson of Thomas Alexander Carter - in a storied Carter line that goes back to the 1100s in England. Instances of given name Newton in the more recent portion of this line support the placement of William Levi Carter in this model. However, documentation needs to be found for William Levi Carter as son of Henry Newton Carter. William Levi Carter seems to have had two younger brothers. One of those brothers seems to have taken an Orr bride, first name unknown. When that brother died, William Levi Carter seems to have married his brother's widow. Her two children, one son and one daughter, each aged 5 to 10 in William's 1840 household, may be by William or by his younger brother. By 1840 William Levi Carter's household was listed in the census for Marshall County, Tennessee; William's household then was adjacent to the household of his future father-in-law, John A. William Levi Carter seems to have located in Arkansas initially without Elizabeth and her three children. Hughes/Orr family legend states that Elizabeth walked from Mississippi to Arkansas to find the father of her three children. Another family legend indicates that William and Elizabeth were not married until their time in Arkansas. "My mother-in-law who died recently always told me that Elizabeth was walking to town one day with the Carter person, when the preacher drove by, and they hopped on the back of his wagon and he married them."

William Newton Carter

William Newton Carter enlisted 17 July 1861 Co. C, 11th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army. He was discharged at Shreveport, Louisiana. Confederate veteran pension application number 15689, for W. N. Carter, was dated and approved Aug. 2, 1909, in Henderson County, Texas. The application states that W. N. Carter lived in the town of Baxter in Henderson County. A witness to his pension application was William R. Thornton.
