At the Georgia Ports Authority, we are laying the foundation for a future in which our deepwater ports are even more powerful engines for economic development.
Infrastructure investment is a vital facet of our mission to accommodate growing trade, empower entrepreneurs and strengthen industries.
In a key development, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued contracts to dredge the final portion of Savannah's shipping channel, and by late 2021 will deliver a deeper harbor and improved efficiency for Neo-Panamax vessels.
At Garden City Terminal, the Mason Mega Rail project will double rail lift capacity to 2 million twenty-foot equivalent container units per year. Phase I of the project opens in March 2020, with Phase II opening later in the year. This massive rail expansion will enable the Port of Savannah to capture additional market territory through direct service to population centers across the Midwest.

The deepwater ports of Savannah and Brunswick make opportunity accessible across the state of Georgia, driving business expansion, luring new investors and jobs to our state, and ensuring our nation's competitiveness on the global stage.
Our ports are the central hub in a network of connections. On one side is a global system of ocean shipping routes so broad Savannah was named the most connected container port in North America. On the other are unmatched links to road and rail transit that expedite cargo to important inland markets such as Atlanta, Memphis, Chicago and beyond.
To understand the scale of the Georgia Ports Authority's impact on the state and national economies, consider its place among top-tier U.S. ports. The Port of Savannah is the third busiest gateway for global sea trade in the U.S., after only L.A.-Long Beach and New York-New Jersey. Support from new and existing customers has made Savannah the fastest-growing container port in the nation over the past decade. Georgia is also the second busiest U.S. hub for the import-export of cars, trucks and tractors thanks to trade through the Port of Brunswick and Savannah's Ocean Terminal.
Based on the strong foundation of Georgia's supply chain infrastructure and GPA's track record of success, this state's role as a national asset for worldwide commerce is destined to grow. The expansion of our facilities and the significant progress made on the Savannah Harbor deepening are setting the stage for a new era in which GPA will move more cargo faster than ever, and expand its service area deep into the American Midwest.
