Angelo Castillo

Angelo Castillo is a Cuban born American raised in New York City. Earning an academic and athletic scholarship, he graduated from Wagner College with a degree in business administration and an MBA in finance. A graduate of New York Law School, he completed a senior executives program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and served as an executive in the Koch, Dinkins, Giuliani, Cuomo, and Pataki administrations in New York. He was named director of US HUD's Florida State Office of Community Planning and Development in 1996, and Director of Human Services for Broward County in 1998, where he was responsible for a $250 million budget with 1,200 staff. He returned to US HUD as Deputy State Coordinator for Florida in 2000. From 2003 until joining Sheriff Israel's command staff in 2013, he served as President and CEO of non-profit corporation. He also served as an adjunct professor at St. Thomas University's Graduate School of Management. In 2004, Mr. Castillo was elected to the Pembroke Pines City Commission becoming the first Hispanic American elected to serve on the City Commission in 30 years. He has four times served as Vice Mayor of his home city. Castillo has served as a member of the Broward County Charter Review Commission, is a former Chair and current member of the Broward County Planning Council, the Broward MPO, and the Broward County Tourist Development Council. Other board experience includes board member emeritus Hispanic Unity of Florida, Broward County Juvenile Justice Board, Broward County Health Facilities Authority, Family Central, and Women in Distress boards of directors. Mr. Castillo has received numerous awards for his work in the field of health and human services, housing and community development, economic development and government finance. He was named Municipal Leader of the Year by the Broward County Council of Professional Firefighters, Humanitarian of the Year by the City of Hope Foundation, Humanitarian of the Year Broward Cystic Fibrosis Association, Elected Official of the Year by the Broward Coalition for the Homeless, and is a recipient of the Stephen R. Booher Memorial Award. In November of 2013, Sheriff Scott Israel named Mr. Castillo to his executive team. As Director of Research and Strategic Planning at BSO, he was responsible for working with stakeholders to define the agency's mission, vision, and long-term goals. A key responsibility of the department is to collect and analyze data that enhances BSO's core public safety missions and maximizes funding opportunities for the agency. Castillo and his wife, Lisa Yagid Castillo, are parents to two adult daughters, one a registered nurse and the other a college student. Castillo is an avid reader, writer and when possible he plays golf. He maintains a very active Facebook Page devoted to public affairs and civic engagement. He is a self-proclaimed moderate who believes that "government works for us, not the other way around."

Commissioner Jay D. Schwartz and his sister were born and raised by their single Mother in Philadelphia. Commissioner Schwartz moved to Pembroke Pines in 1989, and spent his college days living with his grandparents in the Park Place Condominium Community. He was the first in his family to attend college, having earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Barry University, and his post graduate Masters in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Commissioner Schwartz was elected to the Commission on January 31, 2012 and re-elected in 2016 and again in 2020. He was appointed Vice Mayor four times, 2014-2015, 2019 and Oct. 2020. Prior to being elected, he served as Chair of the City's Economic Development Board, Chair of the Broward County Central Examining Board for General & Specialty Contractors, Chair of the Miramar/Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Development Committee, and served on the Chamber's Government Affairs Committee. Commissioner Schwartz and his wife are proud parents of two school aged children. He is a pilot, a business executive, entrepreneur and YouTuber.
