The Macular Society was founded in 1987 by Elizabeth Thomas who was dismayed by the lack of support that she, and other people with macular disease, were offered. It is only about 5mm across, but is responsible for our central vision, most of our colour vision and the fine detail of what we see. A healthy macula is about 250 microns (one quarter of a millimetre) thick... Explore Macular Society's dedicated research into Beating Macular Disease.
