He transitioned from civil engineering consulting to a career in building science after designing and moving into his own net-zero home in 2021. Riley provides energy modelling services using Passive House Planning Package and Hot2000, along with project management and energy consulting as part of the Airtight Engineering team.

Steffen holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering. Steffen's career in sustainable buildings began with Integrated Designs, completing LEED certification and commissioning of commercial, institutional, and residential buildings throughout Canada. Steffen is a Certified Passive House Tradesperson and teaches with Passive House Canada.
