Braden Welborn - CCO

Prior to joining Duke in September 2016, Braden focused on K-12 education policy as a communicator for the Center for Teaching Quality, a national organization committed to advancing the teaching profession. She has also worked for City Academy, A+ Education Partnership, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, in addition to teaching undergraduate literature and creative writing courses. Braden holds an M.A. in English and American literature from Washington University in St. Louis, where she was an Olin Fellow and American Culture Studies Fellow. She also earned a M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Alabama and a B.A. in English from Birmingham-Southern College.

Bryan Koen

Bryan's work supports the Nicholas Institute's educational programming, events and communications. Bryan Koen's (he/him/his) work supports the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability's educational programming, events, and communications. His varied background includes experience in student and faculty support at the University of North Carolina, arts administration at the Library of Congress, and editing for multimedia publications. He holds a B.A. in English and an M.F.A. in creative writing from George Mason University, where he also served as an instructor.

Caroline Gorham

Caroline is the Senior Program Coordinator for the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability. Prior to joining the Energy Initiative in summer 2017, she worked for Duke's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, where she provided support with administrative and financial functions. Caroline has also worked as a sustainability coordinator for a large food service company, as a member services/training manager at a start-up in the legal industry, and as an administrative assistant in local government. She is a graduate of the University of Florida, where she completed a bachelor's degree in business administration with a focus in international studies and a minor in Spanish. Caroline is the Senior Program Coordinator for the institute.

Dr. Brian Murray

Dr. Brian Murray (he/him/his) is the interim director of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability at Duke University, an organization created by the merger of the Duke University Energy Initiative and Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. Before the merger, Murray directed the Energy Initiative and previously served for eleven years as director of the environmental economics program at the Nicholas Institute. Murray is widely recognized for his work on the economics of energy policy, particularly as it relates to efforts to mitigate climate change risk. This includes the design and assessment of market-based instruments such as carbon tax, cap-and-trade, and tradable performance standards, as well as policies affecting the markets for bioenergy and other renewables. Murray is among the original designers of the allowance price reserve approach for containing prices in carbon markets that was adopted by California and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) cap-and-trade programs and served on a National Academy of Science panel to examine the effects of the U.S. federal tax code on energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. He was a convening lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report on greenhouse gas mitigation from land-use change. Throughout his more than 30-year research career, Murray has produced many peer-reviewed publications on topics ranging from the design of market-based environmental policies and the effectiveness of renewable energy subsidies to the evaluation of programs to protect natural habitats such as forests, coastal and marine ecosystems. Murray is a research professor at the Nicholas School of the Environment and the Sanford School of Public Policy. In 2015, Murray was a Fulbright Scholar in Environment and Economy at Canada's University of Ottawa. Brian Murray is the interim director of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability, as well as a research professor at the Nicholas School of the Environment and the Sanford School of Public Policy.

Dr. Eric Rohlfing

Dr. Eric Rohlfing (he/him/his) advises efforts by university leadership and faculty to 1) develop and execute a strategy for advancing energy science and technology and 2) cultivate technological innovation and entrepreneurship. He also mentors energy students. He joined Duke after a distinguished career at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), where he most recently served as senior technical advisor for the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), which advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment. During his tenure at DOE, Eric also served as acting director for ARPA-E, its deputy director for technology, and the director of the chemical sciences, geosciences, and biosciences division of DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences. Prior to joining DOE in Washington, Eric was a principal member of the technical staff at its Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA. He has a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Virginia (‘77) and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Princeton University (‘82). Eric lives in Durham with his wife (and Duke alumna) Dr. Celeste Rohlfing (T'79), the former chief operating officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Eric and Celeste are the parents of two Duke alumnae: Meg (T'09) and Anne (T'12, M'16). Eric advises university leaders on advancing energy science and technology at Duke and mentors energy students.

Dr. Kyle Bradbury

Kyle brings experience in machine learning and statistical modeling to energy problems. Dr. Kyle Bradbury brings experience in machine learning and statistical modeling to energy problems. He completed his Ph.D. at Duke University, with research focused on modeling the reliability and cost trade-offs of energy storage systems for integrating wind and solar power into the grid. Kyle holds a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University where he specialized in statistical signal processing and machine learning, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University. He has worked for ISO New England, MIT Lincoln Laboratories, and Dominion.

Dr. Luana Marangon Lima

Dr. Luana Marangon Lima is an assistant professor of the practice for energy and environmental analytics at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment.As associate director for educational programs at the Energy Initiative, she works with faculty, staff, and students to enhance energy education offerings at Duke University. She received her Ph.D. in operations research and industrial engineering from the Cockrell School of Engineering at University of Texas at Austin (2011). She holds a M.Sc. (2007) and B.Sc. (2005) in electrical engineering from Universidade Federal de Itajuba (Brazil). Prior to joining Duke, she was an assistant professor in the electrical and energy systems department at Universidade Federal de Itajuba (Brazil). She also worked as a consultant for several years at MC&E. Her research and teaching focus on optimization methods and data analytics applications to energy systems-more specifically, renewable energy integration, electricity markets, power generation planning and scheduling, and transmission and distribution grid regulation. Luana works with faculty, staff, and students to enhance energy education offerings at Duke University.

Dr. Tom Cinq-Mars

A historian by training, Dr. Tom Cinq-Mars investigates questions at the intersections of business, energy, and the environment in terms of change over time. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University with research focused on links between modern (Soviet) Russia's oil industry and economic diversity within the former Soviet Bloc. A two-time Fulbright Scholar to Russia, Tom highlights the relevance of cross-cultural communication to energy decision-making as he teaches courses geared toward first-year students, including "The History of Energy," "Energy & Society," and "Energy, Environment, and Climate Change." Tom supports the research of business, energy, and the environment over time.

Robin Marley

Robin assists our administrative staff in finance, organization and scheduling. Robin supports the work of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability's administrative staff in the areas of finance, organization and scheduling. Hers is the first friendly face you see when you enter the institute's offices. Prior to her employment at Duke, Robin had a lengthy career as a Christian education/program director and developing ministries consultant, and owned and operated a small business. She has a B.A. in religion from Elon University with a concentration in Christian ethics.

Suellen Aldina - COO

Job Titles:

Suellen has more than 20 years' experience in the energy sector, finance, operations and contract negotiations. Suellen Aldina (she/her/hers) has more than 20 years' experience in the energy sector, finance, operations and contract negotiations. She has served in officer-level and senior operations management roles at major energy companies and consulting firms including Battelle Memorial Institute, ICF Consulting, Energy and Environmental Analysis, Public Service Electric & Gas, and Public Service Conservation Resources. Suellen has also served as senior vice president of vendor relations at FM Facility Maintenance LLC and vice president of global procurement at Wyndham Worldwide. She joined Duke University in 2013, managing technology-related contracts across the university and health system before she joined the Energy Initiative in September 2014. Suellen earned a bachelor's degree in economics and master's degree in applied economics from The American University, Washington, D.C.

Trey Gowdy

Trey supports the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability work through research, project management, and educational programs. This includes work on open energy data, transportation electrification in the Southeast, interdisciplinary energy and climate student programs, and more. Trey holds a M.A. in public administration and a B.A. in political science from the University of North Florida. Trey has worked in state government clean energy and higher education sustainability programs at the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources and Florida State University Sustainable Campus. Trey supports the institute's work through research, project management, and educational programs.
