Since moving to Belize, I have learned that much of what we "Gringos" take for granted for our children and our grandchildren is not available to many of the children in Belize. Though education is valued and prized, many cannot afford the tuition cost averaging $70 ($35 US) a year to send their children to primary school. There is also the added cost for books with an average cost of $100 yr ($50 US), uniforms costing about $80 yr ($40 US), school supplies averaging $50 yr ($25 US) and food costing $10 week ($5 US) for many children who live too far to travel home for daily lunches. High school tuition can cost close to $1,000 ($500 US) a year with an added bus transportation cost averaging $4 each day for the many who live in remote areas...
