Addison Fischer

Job Titles:
  • Principal, Zenerji LLC, Naples, Florida
Addison Fischer is Principal, Zenerji LLC, Naples, Florida, and is elected as an Honorary Member. This company, founded in 2000, is an asset management company with major activities in worldwide conservation. Before founding Zenerji, he was a principal for RSA, 1980s to 1995, and also for VeriSign. He is a co-founder of Duquesne Capital Management, and of Allen Services Corporation. He founded Fischer International in 1982. He earned two degrees in Mathematics from West Virginia University, a BS in 1970, and an MS in 1972. His major accomplishments include development of Executor for WVU's IBM S360 computer. This operating system modification materially increased job throughput by eliminating most of the operating system overhead required to schedule multiple jobs. Executor was the only commercially successful product that was actually a high function, high efficiency replacement for a significant portion of heretofore IBM supplied operating system software. This led to the founding of Allen Services Corporation. Fischer also partnered to form Duquesne Capital Management, and wrote a program to analyze financial transactions that contributed to the early success of this venture, which continues today. He also founded Fischer International in Naples, Florida, which produced an Email system for IBM mainframes that, at one time, was used by over 200 of the Fortune 500 companies. Fischer independently investigated prime number theory, and then partnered with three MIT professors to form RSA, Inc., and later VeriSign. Worldwide, he is named inventor on scores of technology patents, primarily in applications of cryptography. More recently, Fischer has become actively involved in preserving for future generations our environment, resources, health, and freedom. He was a principal founder of the Community School of Naples and is a board member of the Amazon Conservation Team. In Costa Rica, Fischer has acquired and is preserving one of the largest privately owned tracts of rain forest in Central America, and by preventing poaching there has the only naturally expanding population of jaguars in Mesoamerica. Fischer is also protecting a large tract of wilderness in Patagonia. In addition, Zenerji supports the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation, of which he was recently elected a board member. In 2000, he received the WVU Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Recognition Award. He was nominated by George Trapp.

Dennis R. Toothman

Job Titles:
  • Chief Technology Officer for CipherOptics
Dennis Toothman, a magna cum laude BSEE graduate of WVU in 1975, founded CipherOptics in 2000. CipherOptics is an industry leader in large scale, high performance encryption solutions. His career has spanned hardware, software, and large scale networking experience with multi-billion dollar corporations and start-up organizations, developing and pioneering innovative high-technology products. Toothman began to focus on the security industry in 1998 as Vice President of Engineering for Celotek. While at Celotek, he produced a family of ATM encryptors supporting T1, T3, OC-3, and OC-12 interfaces (1.5 - 622 Megabits). His products were adopted by one of the largest Swiss banks and are still in use today, representing the world's largest encrypted ATM deployment. Recognizing that the market for ATM products was limited, Toothman left Celotek and began discussions with Lucent Technologies regarding the development of a Gigabit IP encryptor for the storage marketplace. Working from his basement, Toothman negotiated a $3.5 million contract with Lucent. This contract was used to launch CipherOptics in August 2000. Toothman was featured on the cover of Communication News magazine in March 2000. Many of the ideas Toothman discussed with Communication News came to fruition when he founded CipherOptics. In 2002, Toothman introduced the industry's first wire-speed gigabit IPSec encryptor, based on Network Processor, TCAM, and encryption acceleration hardware. As Chief Technology Officer for CipherOptics, Toothman has architected and managed the implementation of a family of encryption devices ranging from 10 Megabits to 10 Gigabits. His products are in use throughout the world by many government, financial, and manufacturing institutions. In March, 2009 Gartner selected CipherOptics as a "Cool Vendor in Infrastructure Protection." Over the course of his career, Toothman spent considerable time translating customers' business needs into viable, market-changing technology solutions. Some of the game changing products he developed earlier in his career include: SNA software that was heretofore available only from IBM. This innovative software gave NCR a significant competitive advantage in accounts previously dominated by IBM. This software led to NCR's single largest deal for Office Automation products in 1983. Large scale document transfer systems based on SNA/X.25 protocols for the Federal Reserve Bank. Toothman personally installed network equipment and custom developed software to connect the Kansas City, Denver, and Oklahoma City locations. Large scale email and directory systems based on OSI, DECNET, and SNA protocols for DuPont. These systems supported 110,000 users, with gateways to the world's largest DECNET network. Medical imaging workstations supporting networked cardiac catheterization procedures for Toshiba. These workstations supported high speed ATM communications and the industry's fastest JPEG compression hardware. Microprocessor-based, multi-protocol communications adapters. This capability, in 1976, enabled NCR to achieve performance and line density levels previously unachievable. As a graduate student at WVU, Toothman was awarded a stipend by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in recognition of his software engineering contributions to the mine monitoring project under the direction of Dr. M. Dayne Aldridge. Toothman is a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon math honorary, and Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi engineering honoraries. He is also a 33 year member of IEEE.

Joseph M. McGraw

Joseph M. McGraw was born in Beckley, West Virginia on April 27, 1953, the son of (the late) Horace and Rita McGraw of McGraws, (Wyoming County) West Virginia. He attended WVU from 1971-1975 and graduated magna cum laude with a BSEE in December 1975. He was a member of the engineering honoraries Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi at WVU. In 1974-75 McGraw was chosen Outstanding Electrical Engineering Student by Eta Kappa Nu. McGraw attended graduate school at Virginia Tech and obtained a MSEE in March of 1977. His first job after graduation was as a software engineer for the Bendix Corporation. While at Bendix, he was involved in developing microprocessor software to control gas chromatographs. Later he managed a project to develop a process Infrared Analyzer based on technology from the U.K. In February, 1983, he was laid off from Bendix and he decided to start his own company, Greenbrier Electronics. Greenbrier Electronics' products were a portable electronic tester (called the 4400), which would permit relatively lower skilled personnel to troubleshoot electronics. The product was successfully developed but the sales were not great enough to support an independent company. McGraw sold the assets of Greenbrier Electronics to Temco Instruments, Inc. in 1986. McGraw subsequently worked for Temco for three years and was primarily responsible for Marketing and Sales. McGraw left Temco in May of 1989 to form Greenbrier Technical Services, Inc. (GTS). GTS was initially founded to provide electronic repair services to OEMS, industrial and commercial customers. Later replacement parts such as electronic modules and electromechanical assemblies were developed and now represent about 80% of the company's sales. GTS operates a 7,200 square foot headquarters in Lewisburg, WV and a 14,000 square foot production and repair facility in Ronceverte, WV.
