During the British Raj, separate localities were allotted to different communities. That was an accepted practice at that time. The Brahmins of the town were mostly living in the old town at Raja street, Telugu Brahmin Street, Thomas Street etc. The locality which is known as Ramnagar was not in existence.Representations were made to the collector of Coimbatore for acquiring lands and allotting the same to Brahmins who wanted to shift from places like Telugu Brahmin Street, Thomas Street, Raja Street etc. Some lands were acquired on the representation made to Collector and allotted to Brahmins and the locality was called 'Brahmin Extension'. The limits of Coimbatore town stopped with Avanashi Road on the south. Simultaneously, the portion which is now known as Kattoor was acquired and allotted to different communities.
