Mr. Rust was born into a family of builders in Northern Virginia which spans three generations. Early years in the construction industry were followed by formal architectural training at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. He returned to Northern Virginia to serve his apprenticeship in Old Town, Alexandria, and has maintained his practice there since 1977. The scope of his projects includes residential (single and multi-family), commercial (office, retail, restaurants), institutional (schools and churches), recreational (resorts), land planning and urban design (master planning on a scale ranging from 150 acres to 1,000 acres). Local and national publications have featured his residential and commercial work. Experience spanning both the design and construction aspects of the building industry enables Mr. Rust to work with clients to evaluate options and make practical design decisions. He is further known for producing compatible new architecture in historic contexts. The President's Advisory Council on Historic Preservation cited his work at One Prince Street for excellence as an infill project in a historic district. A civic group in Alexandria commissioned Mr. Rust to perform a study and analysis of the existing design elements of the part of the historic George Washington Memorial Parkway that transits Alexandria. The resulting report led to his inclusion in a citizen/government committee that generated design principles for renovation and new development on Washington Street. The city subsequently incorporated those principles into the zoning ordinance as well as the historic district guidelines.

Mr. Orling has been a partner with Rust | Orling Architecture since the firm's inception in 1979. In that time he has gained experience in urban planning, residential design, design of exhibit and conference facilities, specialized computer and TV facilities, office and commercial buildings, health care facilities, restaurant and hospitality design and restoration, and adaptive reuse of old and historic structures. Mr. Orling grew up and attended school in Arlington, Virginia and returned to Northern Virginia to practice architecture in 1978. In 1979, '80, and '81, he was awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Arts in a program entitled "Architect-in-the-Schools" for Martinsburg, West Virginia. In this program, Mr. Orling taught environmental education, directed projects related to the schools' physical facilities; and included the nomination and establishment of a National Register Multi-Resource Historic District. At the end of this program, he was granted a scholarship by the National Trust to attend their Community Preservation Workshop in Lancaster, PA. Recent projects include a 250,000sf mixed use multi-family project with structured parking for Diamond Properties in Alexandria, Virginia; a 30,000sf restaurant and banquet facility for Clyde's Restaurant Group in Leesburg, Virginia and a 23,000sf restaurant for the Clyde's Restaurant Group at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.

Mr. Ernst has been with ROA for 25 years, starting as an intern, and is now one of the Principals of the firm. He has served as the project manager on numerous projects of different building types and scales. His projects include community amenity buildings, restaurants, single family homes, multi-family housing, religious buildings, commercial office space, and educational facilities. Through these varied projects he has gained valuable design, construction, and management experience. His responsibilities on the projects are as varied as the projects themselves and have included architectural design, existing condition documentation, project presentation, creating and coordinating construction documents, consultant coordination, and construction administration. Most recently Mr. Ernst completed a 41,000sf multifamily residential building at 700 N. Washington St. in the heart of Old Town. He also served as the architectural designer for the Lansdowne on the Potomac community Master Plan group, which plans to reinvigorate the dated neighborhood.

Mr. Fleming joined Rust|Orling Architecture in 2000, where he studied under his mentor, John Rust. Now as a Principal of the firm himself, he is putting his 20+ years of considerable experience in architectural design to use navigating the complicated project approval processes of the City of Alexandria, and other jurisdictions. In addition to his experience in all phases of architectural design from feasibility studies through construction administration, he is continually relied upon for his knowledge of the most recent software and technology. Mr. Fleming possesses not only LEED BD + C accreditation, but is certified in EarthCraft construction methods as well. Mr. Fleming continues to strive toward the construction of high performance, sustainable buildings. Currently Mr. Fleming is spearheading the design teams for four complex assisted-living projects in Old Town Alexandria, Fairfax, McLean, and Vienna. The successful greenlighting of particularly the Old Town and Vienna projects after arduous levels of bureaucratic consideration and community involvement are great achievements. All four of these projects are anticipated to be useful, aesthetically-pleasing, and welcome additions to their surroundings.
