Jordan Larson

Jordan Larson completed his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2010. While attending university, Jordan worked for the University of Alberta as an undergraduate researcher (summer 2008), and as a junior engineer at Dacro Industries (summer 2009). He designed and evaluated components for large pressure vehicles following ASME VIII standards. After graduation, Jordan worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer. He primarily worked on mechanical designs of heavy duty oilfield equipment, typically prototype and custom equipment for drilling. Jordan joined Anderson Associates Consulting Engineers Inc. in 2012. Mark Sawa

Mark Sawa joined Anderson Associates Consulting Engineers Inc. in 1997. His diverse technical and analytical skills and forensic experience add depth and expertise to Anderson Associates' team. Mark graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1992. He continued his education and, in 1996, obtained a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in Solid Mechanics by conducting research in the area of pneumatically inflated structures. Prior to joining Anderson Associates, Mark worked for a consulting engineering firm in Calgary, providing technical services and forensic engineering to the insurance and legal industries. He concentrated his efforts on reconstructing motor vehicle collisions. At Anderson Associates, Mark has continued to provide forensic engineering services in the area of motor vehicle accident reconstruction. He has investigated collisions involving low and high speed vehicle impacts, bicycles, motorcycles, commercial vehicles, and pedestrians. Mark's analyses take into account seatbelt use and effectiveness, event data recorder interpretation, visibility issues, impact severity, impact speeds, pre- and post-impact speeds and movements, potential to avoid impact, and mechanical defects. Mark has testified in the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta, Supreme Court of British Columbia, and the Court of Queen's Bench for Saskatchewan on numerous occasions in the area of motor vehicle accident reconstruction. Matthew Hajek

Matthew Hajek earned his Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2018. Matthew was part of the Co-op program at the U of A and completed 20 months of placement in the Co-op program. After graduation, Matthew moved to Melbourne, Australia for 3 and a half years. While in Australia, Matthew worked the second half of 2019 as a Materials Engineer assisting in failure analysis, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing. Matthew then joined an Engineering and consultant company as a Project and Forensic Engineer. Matthew conducted fire safety assessments of multi-residential and aged care buildings, participated in audits of fire safety systems in buildings, and contributed to fire investigations, forensic investigations, and legal proceedings related to fire engineering and fire events. At the beginning of 2022, Matthew returned to Edmonton and joined Anderson Associates/AlphaMet Metallurgical & Welding Engineers (a division of Anderson Associates Consulting Engineers Inc.) as an Engineer-in-Training. Matthew is involved with material failure analysis, material quality assurance, and material/mechanical testing.

Michael Rees

Michael (Mike) Rees earned his degree as a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1994 from the University of Alberta. He is a professional member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). Early in Mike's career, he worked in a fabrication facility managing and providing technical assistance for the construction and fabrication of oil and gas drilling structures. He later worked for rolling element bearing manufacturers providing technical support for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), as well as industries such as: pulp and paper mills; mines; aggregate equipment; oil and gas equipment; drilling tools; and agricultural equipment. Paul Nowicki

Paul Nowicki joined the Anderson Associates team in 1994, shortly after graduating from the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. During his time with Anderson Associates, Paul has been actively involved in a wide range of motor vehicle accident investigations, including low speed collisions, high speed highway, motorcycle, pedestrian, and rollover accidents. He has been the lead motor vehicle accident reconstruction consultant on a number of high profile cases. In addition to motor vehicle accident analyses, Paul has been involved in other technical investigations, such as slip and fall accidents, vehicle fire investigations, personal injuries, and engine failure analyses. Paul is one of the first engineering technologists in Alberta to be granted professional technologists status (P. Tech.(Eng.)) in the field of mechanical engineering, specializing in motor vehicle accident reconstruction and analysis as well as automotive part failure analysis. As a member of the Anderson Associates team, Paul provides forensic expert services to Insurance adjusters and Legal counsel. He is an accepted expert witness in the field of motor vehicle accident reconstruction in the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan, and the Court of Queens Bench of Alberta. Travis Hagglund

Travis Hagglund graduated from the University of Alberta in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also has his Fourth Class Power Engineer's certificate from SAIT, and attended a year of the Petrochemical Engineering Technologist program at NAIT, just previous to attending the U of A. While attending university, Travis took summer employment in the oilfield doing plant and field operating for Imperial Oil at their Cynthia gas plant, and for Numac Energy at their Tangent gas plant and Otter oil battery. He also worked as a labourer doing wellhead tie-ins and plant piping installation for Pillar Construction near Red Earth, Alberta. After graduation, Travis joined Ensign Drilling as a rig hand on a prototype coil tubing rig and a number of conventional rigs. Travis then transferred to Ensign's Nisku office where he worked as an operations engineer designing safety and structural equipment for their feet of rigs. In 2001, Travis joined Allan R. Nelson Engineering as a consulting engineer. He worked on new designs, repair designs, modifications, and certifications of: drilling rigs, service rigs, freestanding rigs, flush-by rigs, and a wide variety of surface drilling equipment. Travis also performed various engineering services on a wide variety of industrial equipment, including overhead and portable cranes and transport trailers. While working for Allan R. Nelson Engineering, Travis began to investigate accidents, failures, and fires as a forensic engineer. He became a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) and a Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI) in 2005. In 2006, Travis became the engineering manager for Alco Inc. Energy Services. He supervised a number of engineers, engineers-in-training, and technologists across three locations that worked on mining equipment, drilling rig handling equipment, and wellhead control equipment. Travis initiated a project to develop a database and automatic certification process for the repair of elevators, tongs, bails, and other drilling rig handling equipment. In 2008, Travis started Korsa Engineering, where he focused on the investigation of fire and mechanical failure losses for the insurance and legal industries. He also engaged in the analysis, design, and drafting of structures for the oil and gas service industry. As part of the necessities of running a small business, Travis handled business development, marketing, client relations, document control, and accounting. In mid 2010, Travis joined ProSolve Consulting Ltd. as the lead mechanical engineer. He led a group of engineers and technologists in the design of dangerous goods transport vehicles, pressure vessels, and other miscellaneous engineering projects. Travis handled client relations, proposal preparation, design basis memorandums, invoices, staff mentoring, and other duties as necessary. Travis joined Anderson Associates Consulting Engineers Inc. in May 2014 as a consulting engineer, and was happy to accept a partnership with the company in fall 2014. He brings a diverse background and strong forensic skills to the company. Travis has investigated many fires, such as vehicle, mobile equipment, and structural fires. He has also investigated explosions that have occurred in gas production buildings. As well as being a CFEI and CVFI through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), he is also in the process of acquiring his FIT (Fire Investigation Technician) certification through the International Association of Fire Arson Investigators (IAAI). Travis is a member of NAFI, IAAI, and the Fire Investigation Association of Alberta (FIAA). Travis has designed, certified, and investigated the failures of a wide variety of industrial and commercial equipment. This list includes all kinds of oil and gas well drilling and service equipment and structures, heavy trucks, transport trailers, process equipment, dangerous goods transport vehicles, cranes, forklifts, mobile lifts, fall protection equipment, and others. Over the years, Travis has conducted many investigations for Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) that have involved either serious injuries or fatalities to workers on the job. In November 2013, Travis was accepted as an expert witness in Alberta's Provincial Court, where he testified concerning a fatality investigation he conducted for OH&S. In June 2015, Travis testified in Provincial Court during a public fatality inquiry concerning a stage collapse that he also investigated for OH&S.
