Andrew Marshall - CTO

Dr. Marshall is co-inventor of Healionics' novel STAR biomaterial, and has over 15 years of experience developing this technology and its applications for improving the performance of implantable medical devices. He has led Healionics' effort to successfully secure more than $7M in competitive non-dilutive SBIR grant awards from NIH and DOD, including $6M to advance our STARgraft technology for maintaining patency of synthetic blood vessels. He holds 25 issued and pending patents. Dr. Marshall also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for iSTAR Medical, Healionics' Belgium-based ophthalmic device spinout. He designed the biointegrating porous biomaterial used in iSTAR's glaucoma drainage devices, including MINIject, a novel micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device with exceptional early clinical results. Dr. Marshall has been recognized as one of 40 Under 40 influential leaders and innovators by Medical Devices & Diagnostics Industry magazine, and he was honored at the 2012 World Congress on Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine as the recipient of the Innovation/Commercialization Award. Dr. Marshall earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington and has a BSE in Biomechanical Engineering from Stanford University.

Arthur J. Coury

Dr. Coury has more than 40 years of expertise in the field of Biomaterials, including senior management roles: Director of Polymer Technology and Corporate Research Fellow at Medtronic, VP of Research and CSO at Focal, VP of Biomaterials Research at Genzyme. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and has been recognized as one of "100 Notable People in the Medical Device Industry" by MD&DI magazine. Dr. Coury holds a PhD in organic chemistry and an MBA from University of Minnesota.

Buddy D. Ratner

Buddy Ratner co-invented STAR biomaterial and is the Darland Endowed Chair in Technology Commercialization, Professor of Bioengineering and Professor of Chemical Engineering at University of Washington. He received his PhD in polymer chemistry from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Professor Ratner has served as president of Society for Biomaterials, president of AIMBE, vice president of the Tissue Engineering Society International (TESI), and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA. He is a fellow of: American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), AVS Science and Technology Society, and Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE). Ratner has authored more than 400 scholarly works in biomaterials, tissue engineering, polymers, biocompatibility, surface analysis of organic materials, self-assembly, nanobiotechnology and RF-plasma thin film deposition. His awards include: Clemson Award for Contributions to Biomaterials Literature, Stine Award in Materials Science (AIChE), Welch Award (AVS), Hall Award from Society for Biomaterials. Dr. Ratner was recently elected a Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Dr. Maginness has extensive experience in commercializing reliable and cost-effective products. He is a co-founder of Healionics and a 35-year veteran of the medical device industry, with prior VP of Engineering roles at major companies such as Siemens Medical, ATL (now Philips Ultrasound), and CIBA-Geigy. At those companies, he managed the development and launch of multiple new products, as well as complex multi-company and multi-national projects in Europe, Japan, Korea and India. Dr. Maginness has also held research positions at Stanford University and worked on technology development and business planning for various startups.

Mike Connolly - CEO, Chairman

Mr. Connolly has over 30 years experience in the medical device industry as an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and CEO. He cofounded several device companies, three of which (Novacept, Cohesion Technologies, Pulmonx) have reached exits worth a combined $2 billion. He also led the regional office for $400 million venture capital firm vSpring (now Signal Peak), and has served as CEO of two early-stage device companies. Mr. Connolly previously served as a Navy officer on a destroyer and taught physics at the U.S. Naval Academy. He has an MBA from Stanford, MS in mechanical engineering from MIT, and BS from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Ryan Takeuchi

Mr. Takeuchi has over 20 years of experience in the medical device industry and private equity. He held various executive roles within the Medical Division of W.L. Gore, most recently serving as head of that division. Prior to Gore, Ryan held various positions at Cordis Corp. and Johnson & Johnson, including product management and marketing. Before that, he was with Behrman Capital, a New York-based private equity firm, where he focused on healthcare investment opportunities. He began his career in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group of Merrill Lynch in New York. Ryan is a Kauffman Fellow, has an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and a bachelor's degree in business economics from University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
