Jennifer Mortensen

Jennifer joined the Board of Historic Tacoma in 2018. She is a preservation professional and is the Preservation Services Coordinator for the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, the statewide nonprofit group dedicated to historic preservation. At the Washington Trust, Jennifer works on advocacy and outreach regarding best historic preservation practices in communities statewide and manages several programs including Washington's Most Endangered Places, the Youth Heritage Project, the Valerie Sivinski Fund, the Heritage Barn Grant Program, and This Place magazine. Jennifer also currently serves as a commissioner on the Tacoma Landmarks Commission. Jennifer holds an MS in Architecture History and Theory (with a Certificate in Historic Preservation) from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Kathleen Brooker

Serves as Historic Tacoma's Board President and Co-Chair of the Preservation Committee. She is a preservation professional who has most recently served as the Executive Director of Historic Seattle. Kathleen's prior experience includes non-profit and government positions with Historic Denver and the NM state preservation office. Trained as an architect, Kathleen and her husband Tim McDonald enjoy working on their historic home in Tacoma's North Slope neighborhood. In addition to serving as Historic Tacoma's Vice President, she is also Co-Chair of the Preservation Committee. Kathleen believes that preservation and design review create strong neighborhoods and attractive downtowns. She admires craftsmanship in all its forms and enjoys serving on the board of the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock.

Marshall McClintock

Marshall McClintock has been a member and past Chair of the North Slope Historic District neighborhood organization since 2003. Marshall has represented the North Slope Historic District on the Landmarks Preservation Commission since 2011. He has been a member of Historic Tacoma since 2007 and of the Tacoma Historical Society since 2002. In 2006 and again in 2009, he was awarded an Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation citation by Tacoma's Landmark Preservation Commission. He has been involved in numerous civic causes. Marshall lives with his husband, Geoff Corso, in the Henry and Birdella Rhodes House, a 1901 shingle-style house designed Ambrose Russell in the North Slope Historic District.

Michael Lafreniere

After retiring after many years working in government, Michael joined Historic Tacoma in early 2018 to bring together his professionalism and passion for historic preservation and communications. A colleague once said about him that he is adept at "using technology for building community rapport and relationships."

Steve Dunkelberger

Steve is a local journalist and author. His strong interest in local history brings a writer's perspective to sharing stories of Tacoma's rich history. Steve was a military brat before graduating from Lakes High School and then WWU before returning to the area to work as a journalist first in Lakewood and University Place, when those cities formed. He then helped found the Lakewood Historical Society, co-authored two books about the city and served on its Heritage Advisory Board. He then started working in Tacoma, where he is a member of several fraternal and historical efforts when he isn't writing articles or books, instructing at Pierce College or teaching in Tacoma schools. His most recent co-authoring produced a historical book about McNeil Island.

Steven Treffers

Steven Treffers joined the Board of Historic Tacoma in 2019. He is an architectural historian at Rincon Consultants, where he assists a wide variety of clients in the public and private realm on projects involving cultural resources. Steven holds a BA in History from University of California, Santa Cruz and a masters in historic preservation from the University of Southern California, School of Architecture. Both professionally and as a former member of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board, Steven has worked closely with agencies, property owners, architects, and stakeholders to identify and manage our collective historic resources. He lives in the North End with his wife, son, and cat, and is excited to be supporting the preservation of Tacoma's unique history and architectural heritage.
