JEKYLL MARKET

Fender purchased the store on January 1, 1973 from the previous owners, Bob and Beth Tarratus. His father, Carlton Fender, followed him over a year later to work on Jekyll after a long career in the grocery business in Jesup. Fender noted at his retirement, "The store has a long history, even before we took over, as it was opened in October 1959 by Dykes & Denmark from Hinesville. Butch Bishop actually came over the year before I did to help out Mr. Tarratus and paved the way for us to buy the store. We have worked well together for over 40 years." Bishop has continued to operate Maxwell's Variety & Hardware Store and expanded the variety store into the new village shopping center as neighbor to the Jekyll Market...
