Alicia Alvarez's areas of expertise are clinical legal education and community economic development. She teaches in the Community Enterprise & Solidarity Economy Clinic and Professional Responsibility. Prior to joining UIC Law in 2019, she was a Clinical Professor of Law and director of the Community & Economic Development Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School where she represented nonprofit and community organizations, cooperatives, and social enterprises in Detroit. She also taught in the Civil-Criminal Litigation Clinic at Michigan Law, focusing on employment law.
Prior to Michigan, Professor Alvarez taught in the Community Development Clinic, Asylum & Immigration Clinic, and Civil Litigation Clinic at DePaul University College of Law. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Valencia and at Boston College Law School and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of El Salvador. She has consulted with clinics throughout Latin America.
Professor Alvarez is a member of the Council of the Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association. From 2016-2019, she served on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). She also served on the AALS Membership Review Committee from 2012 through 2014 and chaired the committee in 2013 and 2014. She served on the Executive Committee of the AALS Section on Clinical Education from 2012-2015. Before teaching, she was a staff attorney at Legal Aid Chicago and Impact for Equity. Professor Alvarez received her BA, magna cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago, and her JD, cum laude, from Boston College Law School.

Arthur Acevedo joined the Law School in 2007. He teaches Constitutional Law, Income Tax, and Business Associations. Before joining the Law School, he taught at the University of Baltimore School of Law. He previously taught as an adjunct professor at DePaul University.
Prior to joining the legal academy, Professor Acevedo worked for McDonald's Corporation, Marbo Inc., Price Waterhouse, and the Internal Revenue Service. Professor Acevedo's scholarship focuses on tax law, corporate accountability, and constitutional law. His most recent scholarship analyzes how corporate interests invoke constitutional theory to advance private interests over the public welfare and asserts that corporate self-interest benefits when engaging in broad-based ethical decision-making. This work of scholarship examines the appropriation of the United States Constitution by corporate interests and its implications on our social, economic, and political institutions.
He has previously written about the auditor's role under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act; the failure by the SEC to provide clear accounting standards; the abuse of tax positions by income tax protesters and tax shelter promoters; and the failure of the legal system in promoting corporate responsibility. His writings have been cited by numerous writers including the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Professor Acevedo is a three-time graduate from DePaul University where he received his undergraduate degree with a double major in accounting and finance, his Master of Science in Taxation, and his Juris Doctor degree. Professor Acevedo also successfully passed the CPA exam. He is fluent in Spanish and proficient in Portuguese. Professor Acevedo is a mentor and faculty advisor to the Latino Law Student Association at UIC Law. He is also the recipient of numerous awards.
Professor Acevedo sits on the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Lawyer's Scholarship Fund of Illinois, a nonprofit organization that provides law firms, corporations, and individuals with a vehicle to support Latino law students with financial grants and career-building opportunities. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Josephinum Academy, a Catholic, college-prep girls' high school empowering inner-city young women with a world-class education and a 100% college placement record.

Megan Bess is an Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the Externship Program at UIC Law School in Chicago. In addition to externship courses, she teaches Professional Responsibility and a leadership seminar. Her research and scholarship focus on professional identity formation, legal ethics, and the future of legal education. She serves as Co-Chair of the AALS Externship Committee, on the Executive Committee and as Chair of the AALS Section on Balance and Well-Being in Legal Education, and on CLEA's Best Practices Committee. Prior to joining the UIC Law faculty in 2019, she served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where she oversaw online degree programs and six graduate degree programs. Before entering academia, she practiced in the litigation department of an Am Law 50 firm in Chicago. She earned her B.S. from the University of Arizona and J.D. from Vanderbilt University.
