With a population of just over 157,000 residents, Manama (or Al Manāma) is the capital of and, largest city in Bahrain. The region's importance dates back to 3000 BC when it was a trading hub between the Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations, and was also known for its delicious date production. Before the introduction of Japanese pearls on the global market, Manama was a large pearl harvesting and distribution center. The discovery of rich oil reserves in the 1930's led to a British take-over of the region, and brought with it the first modern economic boom. Bahrain gained its independence from British rule in 1971. Though its reserves are dwindling somewhat, a 1990's diversification efforts program has led to a broadening of commerce Bahrain.
