Auston is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, where he earned degrees in sustainability and sociology. As a standout athlete, he achieved all-conference linebacker status and later signed with the BC Lions Football Club to play professionally.
Dr. Rafael Penunuri is Newport Beach Recovery Center's Medical Director and has over 20 years of extensive experience in detoxification and general family practice. He has been a trusted doctor in the Southern California medical community since 1985, and is board certified with the American Board of Addiction Medicine since December 2010 and the American Board of Family Practice since July 1985. Dr. Penunuri is a graduate of UCLA School of Medicine. He is also a member of the American Academy of Family Practice and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
Sandie Shepard serves as the Director of Operations at Newport Beach Recovery Center, bringing over 16 years of experience in the non-profit sector to her role. As a product of the social care system, Sandie's journey has fueled her unwavering passion for helping others and creating opportunities for healing and growth.
Her expertise in healthcare management, coupled with her personal commitment to making a difference, ensures that the center operates with compassion, efficiency, and a focus on sustainable recovery. From staff coordination to patient care services, Sandie oversees every aspect of the center's operations with diligence and heart.
Outside of work, Sandie embraces outdoor adventures in nature, finding joy in hiking, canoeing, fishing, and exploring the natural world. She is also an advocate for reducing stigma around mental health and addiction, participating in community initiatives and outreach programs that inspire hope and healing.
Sue has a Bachelors Degree In Business Administration and Management from Redlands University and over three decades of experience in the business world. Sue brings her exceptional organizational and communication skills to the complex world of recovery. She has a driven attitude in work ethics and her experience shows it well. Her area of expertise includes administration, bookkeeping, and payroll. Her professional manner and personal experience make her an invaluable asset to our team. In her spare time, you will find Sue out walking with her dog Izzi or at the beach.
Sylvia Jacques, CADC II, is a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor with over 12 years of professional experience in the field of drug and alcohol recovery. She specializes in working with individuals facing challenges related to mental health, domestic violence, and the legal system. With 34 years of personal sobriety, Sylvia combines her lived experience with professional expertise to provide compassionate support for those navigating daily challenges. She is passionate about inspiring and motivating individuals to develop effective coping skills and embrace life on life's terms.
