Chris Nunn

Chris completed his medical training at Otago Medical School and then traveled to the USA to undertake an interventional fellowship for 2 ½ yrs at the University of Florida. He returned to the Waikato in 1994 to advance the interventional program there and quickly introduced acute infarct angioplasty and stenting to Waikato Hospital. This continues to be a major ongoing interest particularly focused on the acute infarct patient both within the hospital and in the community. He was integral in establishing Community thrombolysis in the Coromandel region with subsequent expansion to the wider Waikato district. Over the years he has taken on various roles within the Australia and New Zealand Cardiac Society and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and currently chairs the New Zealand Subcommittee for Cardiology Training and the Interventional Working group for New Zealand. In 2016 he took over the role of Director for the Department of Cardiology at Waikato Hospital. For many years he has also worked as a clinical advisor for ACC. Dr Ari Kannivelu

Ari is a specialist paediatrician with expertise in cardiology, trained in UK and has been employed in Waikato Hospital, Hamilton since September 2017. Following his undergraduation from Madras Medical College, India (2000), he undertook his specialist training in paediatrics, neonates and paediatric cardiology in UK (CCT 2009). He has had 2 years of training in tertiary paediatric cardiology centres in Birmingham and Leicester (UK). He has published his research work on effects of hyperventilation in children investigated for Long QT syndrome. Ari had been a consultant paediatrician with expertise in cardiology in Shrewsbury, UK between 2009 and 2017, before moving to NZ. He investigates children for congenital and acquired heart diseases (including assessment of heart murmur and cyanosis), provides family screening for inherited heart diseases and offers investigations for general paediatric problems where a cardiac diagnosis may be suspected. He is well experienced in echocardiography, 12 lead ECG, ambulatory ECG and exercise tolerance test in children.

Dr Vijaya Pera

Dr Vijaya Pera is a Cardiologist at Waikato Heart. He graduated from S.V. Medical college in India, followed by further training in UK. He completed Cardiology training in New Zealand and was awarded Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2013. He completed 2-year Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota, USA in 2015. His main interests are General Cardiology, Coronary Artery Disease and Heart Failure. He specialized in all aspects of coronary intervention including percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), assessment of coronary lesions using fractional flow reserve (FFR), intra-vascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Dr. Martin Stiles

Born and schooled in Hamilton, Martin trained at the University of Otago and returned to Hamilton after a year working at Dunedin Hospital. His initial training in Cardiology at Waikato Hospital was completed at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Training in Electrophysiology was continued at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester and at Green Lane Cardiovascular Service. In 2005 he was awarded a New Zealand Heart Foundation Overseas Training Fellowship to commence a PhD on Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter at the University of Adelaide, before returning to Hamilton in 2008. At Waikato Hospital and Midland Cardiovascular Services (located at Braemar Hospital) he established a programme of Atrial Fibrillation Ablation and, with the purchase of a 3D mapping system, advanced the service to include further complex radiofrequency ablation including treatment of Ventricular Tachycardia. Since 2012, cryoablation is also offered at these centres.

Janice Swampillai

Janice was born and grew up near Colchester, Essex, UK and graduated from the University of London. She initially trained in Cardiology in the UK, including a postgraduate research degree (MD) from the University of Wales. Her advanced training in Cardiology was completed in New Zealand in 2012 (FRACP). Janice's subspecialty training includes Electrophysiology and Pacing fellowships at Waikato Hospital and St Paul's Hospital, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. She has a Graduate Diploma in Cardiac Electrophysiology (2013). She returned to New Zealand as a Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Waikato Hospital and Midland Cardio-Vascular Services in 2014. Janice is interested in all heart rhythm problems and consults on all aspects of arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment. This includes diagnostic electrophysiology studies, and ablation of supraventricular tachycardias, ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation (using cryo and/or radiofrequency ablation). She also implants pacemaker, defibrillator and resynchronisation devices. She has a special interest in ventricular arrhythmias.

Raewyn Fisher

Raewyn is Waikato born and schooled with subsequent professional training in Auckland, Hamilton and finally Melbourne where she gained specific skills in echocardiography. She is an experienced general cardiologist, with a special interest in echocardiography, hypertension and heart failure. She is a former Director of Cardiology at Waikato Hospital and Midland Cardiovascular Services (Based at Braemar Hospital where she still works), and currently leads the Waikato Heart Failure Service. Raewyn has expertise in cardiac catheterisation, diagnostic angiography and echocardiography, including transoesophageal and stress echo. She has recently set up a stress echo service at Waikato Heart, to improve non-invasive assessment of ischaemic heart disease and valve disease. She enjoys teaching and is active on local, regional and national Cardiology organisations.

Spencer Heald

Spencer was born in Wellington and graduated through the University of Otago. He commenced training in cardiology in Wellington Hospital before gaining a NZ Heart Foundation scholarship to travel to the UK. He completed his fellowship whilst at St. George's Hospital in London, gaining experience in the rapidly developing field of cardiac electrophysiology, and also in interventional cardiology. He returned as a clinical cardiologist to NZ in 1997, spearheading the development of ablation for treatment of arrhythmias in the Waikato. He is New Zealand's sole combined interventional cardiologist/electrophysiologist with particular interest in cardiac catheterisation; angioplasty and stenting; radiofrequency and cryotherapy ablation; and complex pacing including defibrillators, resynchronisation devices and lead extraction. One of New Zealand's senior electrophysiologists. Spencer was born in Wellington and graduated through the University of Otago. He commenced training in cardiology in Wellington Hospital before gaining a NZ Heart Foundation scholarship to travel to the UK.
