Professor Maxey completed his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Cambridge and received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in 1979. In 1977, he was a pre-doctoral research fellow in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Summer Program at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. He held a post-doctoral position in the Department of Mechanics and Materials Science at the Johns Hopkins University and subsequently was a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Johns Hopkins. He joined the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University in 1982. He is Professor of Applied Mathematics and Engineering and has served as Director of the Center for Fluid Mechanics, Turbulence and Computation. He is presently an editor of Fluid Dynamics Research and was a member of the editorial advisory board for the International Journal of Multiphase Flow, 1997-2010. He has served on a number of committees for the American Physical Society, Division of Fluid Dynamics including the Executive Committee (2006-2009). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society.
