Emotional turmoil can be brought on by a current crisis, persistent long-term problems, depression, anxiety, difficulty in relationships or other emotional problems. For our own protection, we often bury or deny what it is we are feeling, these suppressed emotions then form the blocks or filters through which we live our lives and limit our true potential. Iva offers a safe, supportive, and confidential space, where you can feel heard and understood. Time will be dedicated to your thoughts and feelings during your sessions, where you can work at your own pace to find solutions and peace through your challenging and distressing time. Iva has extensive experience working with individual clients, couples and young people. She uses various compelling models to suit clients' needs including creative arts. Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and a constant struggle. Counselling gives you the space and opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings. Jill Fardell

Life is a process of continuing changes which, whether planned or unplanned, require us to move on (or transition) from what we knew and felt comfortable with, into the unknown, which can feel stressful, confusing and sometimes impossible. Key transitions in life include: Ageing including key birthdays - 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th etc, all of which can affect the way we see ourselves socially, physically, biologically Break ups or changes in a relationship Becoming a parent Redundancy or retirement Death of someone significant in our life Coming to terms with a life-changing or life-limiting condition either in ourselves or a loved one. These are just some examples of transitional situations where we can feel stuck and wish we had someone to talk to. Working with a counsellor can enable you to reflect on your thoughts, fears and emotions, knowing that neither you, nor anything you discuss in the sessions will be judged or revealed. It is different from talking to a friend or relative who knows you because you may not want to share with them your innermost feelings, such as shame, guilt or regret. Finding the right counsellor is important, because it's the relationship between you and your counsellor that really makes the process work. Counselling sessions provide a place to just ‘be' for 50 minutes each week where you can reflect on what is happening in your life, the feelings you may have experienced which, in turn, may have been affecting how you see yourself and others and how you react and respond in different situations. This can be enlightening and liberating in itself, enabling you to work towards a deeper understanding of yourself and a different, more fulfilling life. Working exclusively online, Jill provides short-term and open-ended therapy to clients in the UK and abroad. The advantage of online counselling is that clients can access counselling from anywhere without missing their sessions. Jill uses an approved telemedicine platform, Doxy.me, which is simple to use, reliable and very secure. In an initial, 20 minute, no-cost session, you can discuss with Jill what is bringing you to therapy, how she works and decide whether you both think you can work together. There is no obligation for you to proceed after this meeting. As a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists), Jill practices in line with BACP Ethical Guidelines. She has regular supervision and maintains and develops her knowledge and skills through Continuing Professional Development.

Solution-focused - supporting individuals working towards their own solutions to specific problems. Katie can also work with creative tools and materials, and for clients who find it beneficial she is happy to explore spirituality and faith. Katie works in a short-term or open-ended way, which means that the number of sessions can be limited or open-ended. As well as working in private practice Katie also works as a counsellor for a local charity and with children and young people in a local school. Katie has previously worked as a primary school teacher having gained a PGCE and a BA (Hons) in Informal Education. Paula Saunders

Job Titles:
  • Psychodynamic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor
Paula is a Psychodynamic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor who works from our Brighton clinic or online. She takes a collaborative, creative approach with clients. She was inspired to become a Counsellor due to her experience of volunteering for charities including The Samaritans, Cruse Bereavement Care and Childline and her belief in and experience of the therapeutic benefits of a safe, confidential space to explore how we are feeling through a trusting, supportive relationship. A Psychodynamic approach focusses on supporting you to gain insight into your life and current difficulties by identifying and evaluating patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. The unconscious can hold onto painful feelings and memories, which may be difficult for the conscious mind to process. Exploring early memories and experiences and becoming aware of recurring patterns can allow you to develop a better understanding of the defence mechanisms that can develop to cope with difficult aspects of the past. Paula also integrates other behavioural approaches where applicable, such a CBT techniques, to identify and help change negative thoughts and behaviours. This combination can help build self-awareness, improve coping skills and support long term change. Therapy is a space to look at the life events that have shaped you. As you share your story, Paula is like a "friendly editor", promoting self-discovery. She believes being curious together about your story and harnessing your imagination and creative abilities to therapeutic effect can help you re-write the fixed "narrative" that sometimes constrain us. Paula will work with you to find a balance between supporting and encouraging you to challenge yourself through this time of change, working in a way that allows both for exploring vulnerabilities but is also strength enhancing. Just when we feel at our most broken there can be opportunities for transformation and recovery of aliveness, satisfaction and joy.
