The world has suffered 5 major radiation emergencies since 1945. These include the two Japanese bombings, the South Pacific islands that were contaminated with radioactive fallout in the 1950s, and the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear reactor accidents. In addition, there have been a few well-known close calls like the Three Mile Island or Windscale reactor accidents, and many other potentially dangerous incidents and troubling situations which are largely unknown outside the government or the nuclear industry.
