For more than 15 years we have been dedicated to understanding the patterns we see in the living world through the lens of genomic evolution. We have devised new methods for detecting adaptation in molecular sequences and used these approaches to track functional shifts in proteins over millions of years. We have developed and implemented new ways of constructing genome-scale phylogenetic histories and used these approaches to better understand the deep history of animals, from the root of the mammal tree to the branching order of animal phyla... Primarily our research is focussed on understanding the patterns and processes of evolution and the functional consequences of change at the DNA level. We are interested in fundamental questions in biology from the origin of the eukaryotic cell to the phenotypic diversity of animals. We are focused on understanding the contributions of tree-like and non-treelike processes to evolution of organisms in regulatory and protein coding elements. We..
