Amanda Cardy has an MSc in Public Health from the University of Aberdeen and has worked in medical research for the last 20 years. She has worked on a wide range of studies including those investigating the epidemiology of conditions such as congenital defects, colorectal cancer, childhood brain tumours, as well as the effects of early life experience on adult health. She has been the local coordinator of the Northeast Node of the network since 2005.

Andrew Deans

Andrew joined the NRS Primary Care Team in September 2023. Based in NHS Lothian he has a remit to co-ordinate and facilitate research in primary care locations across Lothian. Andrew has a wealth of clinical research experience spanning over 20 years across a variety of settings, including Phase 1 clinical trials. He has set up and coordinated over 40 commercial and academically sponsored clinical trials within respiratory medicine in both acute and primary care settings. He has also assisted specialist registrars with their MD's and worked with a number of PhD students. Andrew is a member of two Cross Party Groups at the Scottish Parliament: Lung Health and Rare, Genetic and Undiagnosed Conditions. He is also a member of the Lothian Respiratory Managed Clinical Network and The British Association for the Study of the Liver Special Interest Group in Rare Disease. He is an advocate for patients with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and works with the UK patient charity to raise awareness and provide education on the condition. Andrew is looking forward to running studies in general practices and supporting practices that are interested in undertaking research allowing equity of access to research for NHS Lothian patients.

Claire has over 25 years nursing experience in patient care and clinical research (academic and commercial research). In 2000 Claire joined the Clinical Trials Unit (Glasgow Royal Infirmary) as a Clinical Events Monitor for the PROSPER Study, a five-year international commercial trial studying the use of a statin in older adults. In 2002 - 2004, Claire enrolled in a post-graduate course - Certificate in Clinical Research at Liverpool John Moores University/Institute of Clinical Research (ICR), graduating in 2004. She has been involved in the design, set-up and management of clinical trials in various projects. Claire has also worked as a freelance Clinical Research Associate for TowerMains Ltd CRO (UK Project Office) and also within Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS. In 2006, Claire took up the role of setting up the Stroke Research Network alongside Professor Peter Langhorne. She is part of a small coordinating centre based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and her remit covers the whole of Scotland. The SRN compromises 20 CSO SRN funded research nurses covering 24 sites (acute stroke units) across Scotland. As Manager she is responsible for operationally managing the SRN research portfolio which includes national and international clinical trials.

Dr Bhautesh Jani is an academic general practitioner (GP) and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in General Practice. Bhautesh joined University of Glasgow in August 2010 as a clinical lecturer, funded by the Scottish Clinical Research Excellence Development Scheme (SCREDS). Bhautesh was awarded a PhD in Primary Care Research by University of Glasgow in 2016 for his project entitled "Exploring the potential role of allostatic load biomarkers in risk assessment of patients presenting with depressive symptoms". Dr Jani was awarded a NRS Career Research Fellowship funded in 2017. Dr. Ellen Drost joined the network in September 2011 as the SE Node Coordinator and took up her post as Network Manager in August 2018. She completed a PhD at The University of Edinburgh in 1993. Her first post-doctoral position (1993-1995) was at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She returned to the UK, to take up a position as a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh where, over the years, she undertook a range of basic science, qualitative and clinical research studies in the areas of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), oxidative stress and inflammation.

In my role as the Strategic Manager for the Neuroprogressive and Dementia research Network (NDN), we have the opportunity to find strategies to include the under served groups in our society, in research. These may include those living with in remote and rural locations, part of marginalised communities such as LGBTQ+, or the oldest old, to name a few. We are also engaged in ensuring our Patient and Public Involvement groups in both 'Partners in Research' and 'Research in Care Home voices' remain strategically placed within the centre of all our activities.

Dr Ewan Brown

Dr Ewan Brown undertook his medical oncology training in Edinburgh, completed a clinical fellowship in Toronto, Canada and then completed a PhD with the University of Edinburgh. He is currently clinical lead for oncology trials at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre and local principal investigator for several clinical trials in colorectal cancer and melanoma. His major ongoing interests include clinical and translational research in melanoma and colorectal cancer, on-line education and the development of a cancer partnership with Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi. His work is supported by a National Research Scotland (NRS) Career Researcher Award (2013-2018) and a Scottish Government Grant (2013-2018).

Dr Iain Macpherson

Dr Iain Macpherson trained in medicine at the University of Glasgow. After graduating he then completed a PhD at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and trained in Medical Oncology at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. In 2010 he was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre where he specialises in the treatment of breast cancer. He is Principal Investigator for a number of clinical trials in breast cancer and also has an active preclinical research programme, conducted in collaboration with Prof Jim Norman at the CRUK Beatson Institute. He is Chair of the Scottish Cancer Trials Breast Group, and is a member of the NCRI Breast Clinical Studies Group and the Breast Cancer Now Scientific Advisory Board. He is also an expert member of the West of Scotland Research Ethics Committee.

Robert Lindsay (Chair of NRS Diabetes Epidemiology Group) graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1988 and is a Reader in the BHF Cardiovascular Research Centre (Western Infirmary, University of Glasgow). He completed his PhD in fetal programming in Edinburgh in 1997 and postdoctoral work with the diabetes epidemiology group of the National Institutes of Health in Phoenix, Arizona. His principal research interests are early life and genetic determinants of diabetes with a particular interest in diabetes and pregnancy. Current projects a follow-up study to the Fetal Insulin and Glycaemia Study (FIGS). The original study examined the effect of a mother's type 1 diabetes during pregnancy on growth and hormonal axes of her child at birth. The follow-up study (funded by the British Heart Foundation) is inviting children born in the original FIGS collaboration to an examination of diabetes risk factors and obesity at age 7. The study will investigate the health of children born to mothers with diabetes and examine the hypothesis that maternal diabetes in utero exerts a "programming" effect to increase the risk of diabetes and obesity in children. Dr Lindsay is also a co-investigator in the Scottish Family Health Study- a multi-centre study examining the genetic basis of common complex disease in the Scottish population.

Dr Sam Philip graduated from the Mahatma Gandhi University (India). He obtained his postgraduate degree in General (Internal) Medicine from Trivandrum Medical college (M Sivaraman Nair Gold Medal in 1999). Having obtained his MRCP(UK) from the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, he started his specialisation in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He worked as a clinical research fellow on the automated retinopathy detection project as part of the 'Ophthalmic Imaging Group' led by Dr John Olson and Professor Peter Sharp and obtained an MD from the University of Aberdeen for his research. He won the Diabetes UK Young Diabetologist Award 2006 and Fould's trophy (annual congress of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists 2005). He is currently working as a Consultant Physician in the department of Diabetes and Endocrinology and as an honorary lecturer in Biomedical Physics (Ophthalmic imaging group). He is leading the development of teleconsultation service for people with diabetes in Orkney and Shetland. He has a strong interest in research with clinical application and has won awards for projects on integrated screening (Diabetes MCN Professional conference 2007), inpatient diabetes hypoglycaemia management (Service development prize at Diabetes in Scotland conference 2006, 2010), telemedicine consultation (RSM eHealth conference 2010). He is the curator of the Scottish Study group register for young people with diabetes and is a member of the SCI-Diabetes Steering group.

Professor William Whiteley is a Reader in Neurology at the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh and a consultant neurologist in NHS Lothian, working with patients with TIA and stroke. His work seeks to elucidate the mechanisms for prevention of disability due to stroke and dementia through the design, delivery and analysis of epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Of particular interest are: the contribution of vascular risk factors to dementia; the very long term follow-up of randomized trials; clinical diagnosis; and the better use of large electronic health record datasets for more efficient clinical trials and cohort studies.

I have recently joined the Lothian NDN team as a Clinical Studies Officer. After qualifying as a nurse 21 years ago, I worked in both Edinburgh and the Borders in Nursing Home Care, Orthopaedic theatres, Accident and Emergency and then Orthopaedics at ward level before deciding to move into world of Clinical Research. I previously worked at the Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility for the last 10 years, firstly as a Research Nurse and then for the last 9 years as a Senior Research Nurse. In my time at the CRF, I gained a good grounding and education in clinical research and worked on various studies and trials covering a broad range of specialities including GI, Respiratory, Urology, Neurosurgical, Cardiovascular, Rheumatology, Infectious diseases and Diabetes. I also have experience of working on Phase 1/ FIH studies. I worked on and supported the NDN on several of their studies that were run through the CRF, which is where I realised this was the area that I wished to move into and specialise in, and when the time was right, I successfully applied for a post with the Network.

Originally from the Scottish Borders, she moved to Dundee in 2007 and shortly after joined a local Third Sector drug & alcohol support charity as a receptionist. She gained an SVQ3 in Business Administration in 2012 and progressed to Administrator level becoming responsible for HR Administration and Database Management. Jen left the organisation in June 2017, seeing the company merger as an opportunity to apply her experience to another sector. Jen gained a Diploma of Higher Education in Fashion Design for Industry from Heriot Watt University and continues to enjoy using those skills in her free time, most recently helping a Dundee University student theatre society with costumes for their semester one shows.

He has been chairman of the Scottish Diabetes Survey Monitoring Group for 9 years and was deputy-chairman of the Quality Improvement Scotland Diabetes Standards Sub-group. He chaired the Diabetes SIGN Guideline Committee (SIGN 116 published March 2010). He was appointed Lead Clinician for Diabetes in Scotland and Chairman of the Scottish Diabetes Group in January 2011. He also chairs the Quality Improvement Scotland National Data for Quality Improvement Advisory Group. He has been awarded a Health Foundation team leadership award and the 2006 Hospital Doctor diabetes team of the year award. He has research interests in the prevention of diabetes, vascular disease in diabetes, epidemiology of diabetes and its complications and in remote monitoring of diabetes. Professor John Petrie was appointed Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Glasgow in March 2010 having been Senior Lecturer/Reader in Diabetic Medicine at the University of Dundee since 2003. His Clinical PhD was in Glasgow and was followed by postdoctoral training there as a Clinical Lecturer. From 2006, he led the initiation and development of NRS Diabetes and remains active on the NRS Diabetes Steering Group. John currently serves on and/or chairs a number of grant-awarding panels and advisory committees for: the US Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the European EFSD/Pfizer European Programme for Research into Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Patients with Diabetes, the UK National Institute for Healthcare Research, Diabetes UK, and the NovoNordisk UK Research Foundation. His research aims better to understand the mechanisms of vascular disease associated with insulin resistance in diabetes and thereby to improve health outcomes for people with diabetes (types 1 and 2). This involves intensive phenotyping studies (e.g. euglycaemic clamp), larger scale cohort studies (e.g. RISC of which he is on the small Project Management Board), and biomarker discovery/validation. In December 2010 he was awarded major research funding by the US Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for the international REMOVAL trial (of which he is Chief Investigator) which is testing the cardiovascular effects of metformin on the complications of type 1 diabetes over the next five years within the diabetes research networks in Scotland, England, Denmark, Holland, Canada, and Australia. John was a founding member of the International Society of Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research (2004). In 2009-10 he chaired the development of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guidance on glucose lowering in type 2 diabetes. He is an Associate Editor of the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes journal Diabetologia (Impact Factor 6.5).

Karen McBurnie

Karen joined the NHS in August 2001 as a Research Nursing Assistant in the Clinical Investigation & Research Unit (CIRU), Western Infirmary, Glasgow which was headed up by Professor Gordon McInnes. The CIRU was a purpose-built research facility designed to support commercial and academic research studies, mainly concerning hypertension, cardiovascular and diabetes. Karen's role within the CIRU was to provide nursing, laboratory and administrative support to the research team. In June 2008 Karen joined the Stroke Research Network as Research Administrator. During the first year of employment within SRN Karen gained a diploma in Business, Administration & IT at her local college. Karen administrates and manages the SRN portfolio of studies and provides administrative support to the network manager, executive committee and research nurses. From 2010 - 2014 Karen was seconded to work part-time for Professor Peter Langhorne as the UK coordinator for the INTERSTROKE research study - an international case-control study investigating ‘The Importance of Conventional and emerging Risk factors for Stroke in Different regions of the World and in Different Ethnic Groups'.

Kim Stringer has been working in medical research since 2002. I have completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Trials with the University of Edinburgh and hold a BA in Adult Nursing. I am a senior Research Nurse with over 30 years of experience in NHS Lothian. After completing a degree in Nursing Studies at Edinburgh University, I qualified and worked as a midwife in the South of England. I returned to Edinburgh to work in Reproductive Health research at the University of Edinburgh. I then moved to Respiratory Medicine at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh in the role of Research Manager conducting CF Gene Therapy, Asthma and COPD Trials. Following semi-retirement, I joined the network in May 2015 as a Clinical Studies Officer and am currently working on clinical research projects in the disease areas of Parkinson's Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease.

Morag has worked for the network since Mar 2014. She has an honours degree in Psychology and a PGDip in Speech and Language Therapy. Morag worked as an SLT with adults with communication support needs as a result of stroke or a neurodegenerative condition. Following her clinical work she has worked for the past 8 years as a researcher on a range of different research and consultancy projects. These have included: ESRC funded research looking at the impact of aphasia on close relationships and developing a tool for exploring differing perspectives RCSLT / Scottish Government funded consultancy work developing an accessible workshop to support people covered by the Adult Support and Protection Scotland (2007) Act to understand their rights within the act and subsequent training and feedback days supporting SLTs and other professionals to run these workshops within their local areas Consultancy work adapting resources to be communication accessible Scottish Government funded research looking at the feasibility, reliability and validity of the Visual CARE measure for use in AHP services The Prostate Cancer Charity funded research based at the Cancer Care Research Centre, Stirling University, working on a research project exploring the reasons for timing of presentation in Prostate cancer Survivor Scotland, Scottish Government funded consultancy developing a tool and training course for health and social care professionals to work with survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Professor Frances Mair is the Norie Miller Professor of General Practice and Head of General Practice and Primary Care. She is also Research Convenor for the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow. Frances leads an extensive programme of chronic illness, multimorbidity and digital health research that promotes a move to person-centred care, promoting the concept of "Minimally Disruptive Medicine (MDM)" which has gained traction internationally. He is a member of the Gastro-Oesophageal Cancer sub-group and of the Pancreatic Cancer sub-group of the NCRI Upper GI Cancers study group, member of the ILCA Annual Meeting Abstract Committee, former member of CR-UK's Clinical Experts Review Panel, CR-UK's New Agents Committee, and Feasibility Studies Committee, and he is Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Cancer.

Rory McCrimmon

NRS Diabetes Lead Clinician Professor Rory McCrimmon trained at the University of Edinburgh and completed his clinical and speciality training in the South-East of Scotland before becoming an NHS Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool, in 2000. In 2002, he joined the faculty at Yale University, Connecticut, to further develop his basic research in the central regulation of glucose homeostasis, before returning to the UK in 2009 to establish his laboratory at the University of Dundee, where he is currently Professor of Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism and Honorary Consultant, and Lead Clinician for the Scottish Diabetes Research Network. Prof McCrimmon's Laboratory focuses on the basic mechanisms through which the brain regulates whole-body glucose homoeostasis with a particular focus on hypoglycaemia. His laboratory has made a number of important contributions to this field and the work of has laboratory as been presented at many national and international meetings. In addition to his work in research and clinical practice, Prof McCrimmon serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and Diabetic Hypoglycemia, an on-line journal focused on hypoglycaemia in clinical practice. He also serves as a member of the Medical Research Council Clinical Fellowship Training and Career Development Awards Panel, the Scottish Translational Medicine Training Initiative, and the Research Advisory board, Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation.

Professor Sandra MacRury qualified from Glasgow University and after postgraduate training in various hospitals in the city, which included completing an MD thesis on ‘The association between diabetes complications and blood rheology', moved to Inverness where she has been a consultant diabetologist and endocrinologist at Raigmore Hospital since 1994. In 2006 she was appointed the professor of clinical diabetes in the emerging health faculty at UHI Millennium Institute, Inverness. In addition to clinical commitments in diabetes and endocrinology in Highland region, her academic research interests include the effects of lifestyle and therapeutic agents on inflammatory markers and oxidative stress in diabetes, remote monitoring of diabetes with an emphasis on rural locations and genetic associations between diabetes and diet. She and the Highland diabetes research team have been involved with the SDRN for over 2 years and have participated in several multi-centred projects coordinated by the network. She is currently director of the newly established Highland Clinical Research Facility based at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness which hosts research from all medical disciplines and from both clinical and academic institutions within the region. She has been involved in diabetes education for a number of years, helping to develop UHI Millennium Institute's web-based multidisciplinary diabetes modules and chairs Scottish Diabetes Education Advisory Group. She has a particular interest in managing diabetic ketoacidosis and has been instrumental in helping to develop the Scottish Protocol for managing DKA and other patient resources such as an interactive website and Ketocard.
