AnnaHerringjoinedtheDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringfacultyinAugust2022,followingseveralyearsattheAustralianNationalUniversitywheresheconductedresearchasapostdocandAustralianResearchCouncil"Discovery"EarlyCareerfellow.Herresearchenablesefficientdesignandoptimizationoftechnologiestofightclimatechange:preventinggreenhousegasbuildupintheatmospherebystoringcarbondioxideinpermeableundergroundgeologicformations,andinusefulsolidmineralforms.
Herring'sresearchislargelyexperimentalandisbasedonhighly-resolvedvisualizationoffluid(gas,liquid,andsupercriticalphase)flowswithinporousmedia.Sheappliesstate-of-the-artmicrotomographytechniquestoobservecomplicated3Dsolidarchitectureandflowpatterns,onamicro-scalebasis,inotherwiseopaquesamples;andsheusesimageprocessingandmathematicaltopologytoquantifyfluid-solidstructuresandinteractions.Sheproducedthefirstexperimentalevidencethatmicro-scalefluidtopologydictatesreservoir-scaleflowandtransportparametersusedbyengineers.Shealsoinvestigateshowtransportoffluidsthroughsamplescancausechemicalreactions,alteringsolidsurfacechemistryandtransformingsolidstructuresovertime;andshelooksathowthesereactivetransportmechanismscanbemanipulatedtooptimizeflowprocessesindifferentnaturalanddesignedscenarios.Herresearchspanstemporalandspatialscales,chemistryandphysics,andfundamentalscienceandappliedengineeringtopics.
CandaceBrakewoodjoinedthefacultyinAugust2017afterservingonthefacultyattheCityCollegeofNewYorkforthreeyears.SheholdsaPhDinCivilEngineeringfromGeorgiaTechanddualMSdegreesfromMITinTransportationandTechnologyPolicy.Herresearchfocuseson"smart"transportationsystemsandaimstousenewinformationandcommunicationtechnologiestoimproveurbantransportationnetworks.In2016,shewasnamedaRisingStarfellowbytheTransportationResearchBoardandwasselectedforMassTransitMagazine's"Top40under40"list.
