THOMAS J HUGH - Key Persons

Jim Burke

Job Titles:
  • Liver Cancer Research
"Jim Burke was a special person who was greatly admired and loved by many people. Unfortunately, he passed away from liver cancer in 2019. Jim had many friends and work colleagues who supported him through his two and half years of treatment. Throughout this time he remained positive and energetic and his infectious and enthusiastic personality continued to inspire great love and affection. Jim was passionate about many things, a trait we loved in him dearly. His passion to drive liver cancer research forward, to uncover medical breakthroughs and ultimately find a cure, was a passion he energetically asked us to share in. Jim was treated by a large number of skilled medical specialists but he became particularly friendly with Professor Tom Hugh, his liver surgeon. Tom is Professor and Chair of Surgery at the Northern Clinical School, University of Sydney, with a special interest in liver cancer. He became a dear and trusted friend to Jim. As Jim explained to us, he had enormous confidence, that through Tom's established program of research, we would eventually achieve success. He has entrusted Tom to continue this important work, and as a result substantial funds were raised in 2019 to establish a scholarship in his name to support liver cancer research conducted under the supervision of Professor Tom Hugh. Funding clinicians and scientists for this research was a key objective for Jim, and so we will continue to honour this and ensure his desire to find solutions becomes a reality. On behalf of the Burke Family, we thank you for your generous support and look forward to ongoing collaboration to improve outcomes for patients with liver cancer.""
