David Galas, PhD is an internationally recognized expert in molecular biology and human genetics, well known for his work in the Human Genome Project. As a senior investigator at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute (PNRI), he focuses primarily on computational biology.
David has held leadership positions at several of the nation's top research institutions and earned his PhD in physics from the University of California. He served as Director for Health and Environmental Research at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, where he headed the Human Genome Project from 1990 to 1993. Prior to that, he served as Professor and Chair of Molecular Biology at the University of Southern California. He has also held research positions at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and at the University of California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
David is the recipient of several honors, including the Smithsonian Institution Computer World Pioneer award. He has served on many corporate boards, including biotechnology companies he has co-founded. He has also served on national advisory boards, including the Board on Life Science and the National Cancer Policy Board. He chairs the board of directors of the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation and is a lifetime National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences.

Lisa served as Director of the Genome Biology Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the affiliated JGI genome sequencing center, contributing to the human, mouse and other genome sequencing projects as a member of international teams. She is Associate Editor of the scientific journal, PLoS Genetics, and has served on a number of national and international scientific advisory groups. Before joining PNRI in 2020, Lisa was Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology and the leader of a multidisciplinary faculty group focused on neurogenomics, at the Institute for Genomic Biology at University of Illinois.

Richard (Rick) McLaughlin, PhD has a lifelong passion for studying evolution. This passion comes to life in his lab at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute (PNRI), where he studies the evolution of retroelements, major component of noncoding DNA.
Rick joined PNRI as an assistant investigator in 2018. He also holds faculty positions with the University of Washington's Department of Genome Sciences and the Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Program. Students from these programs play a key role in fueling Rick's lab.
