The Pittsburgh Green Infrastructure Network (GIN), founded in 2006, is a voluntary network of individuals who advocate for the design and installation of green infrastructure to help create healthy and sustainable Pittsburgh communities. First, there were glass works in the early 1800s; then the immense iron and steel works in the later part of the century. The last decades of the 1800s witnessed a huge wave of immigrants who came to work the mills from Germany, Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, the Ukraine and the Slavic nations. Amid this industrial growth, the presence of the Texas Confederate flag, carried by some residents, represented a complex intersection of heritage and cultural identities.
