BIXBY SCHOOL - Key Persons

Charlie Elkins

Job Titles:
  • Trustee since 2022
I was born and raised in Chicago, but spent the majority of my time off from school exploring the mountains of Colorado with my family. After attending the University of Vermont, I realized I still couldn't shake those Rocky Mountain formative vacation memories. Jackson Hole came next, and after a few amazing years there, Colorado snuck back into my life. I've been here ever since. In Frisco, I earned my EMT-Paramedic licensure and volunteered with backcountry rescue for both the Summit County Rescue Team in Breckinridge and the West Elk Mountain Rescue in Gunnison. After meeting my wife in the mountains, we decided to move down to Boulder to raise our family. I went back to school and received my Elementary Education degree from CU Boulder, as I've always had a connection and interest in K-5 age children.

My family and I moved to Boulder from Los Angeles in the summer of 2022. My husband, Brett and I have currently have two daughters in Bixby's elementary school. I was the head of product design and development and co-owner of a women's resort-wear company based in Miami, FL. Prior to this, I worked with Federated Stores as a Buyer and Merchandiser in Miami and New York. Our girls thoroughly enjoy Bixby and I am honored to be able to support this incredible space and community.

Michelle McCloskey

Job Titles:
  • Board Vice President / Trustee since April 2022
My son started at Bixby in August of 2020. We enrolled him at the time largely due to the COVID pandemic. We had no idea we were about to join such an amazing community. Over the course of his first year at the school, we began to understand the extraordinary aspects of a Bixby education. Bixby encompasses the well-being of the whole child, teaching our son how to be a kind and thoughtful human. His teachers have consistently been outstanding. They spark his innate curiosity to explore and learn. The individual attention he receives allows him to be challenged at the right times. He truly loves getting up every day and going to school. Being a Bixby trustee will allow me to be part of the community that lays this unique foundation for such important learning. I am looking forward to joining the team that contributes to the growth and mission of Bixby. As a pediatrician, children's mental health and well-being is of particular importance to me. These last few years have certainly highlighted this need in my own patient population. I hope my time as a Bixby trustee will allow me to share and expand upon this knowledge and commitment to children in my community.

Paige Jarquin Backlund

Job Titles:
  • Board President / Trustee since 2020
I was born and raised in Boulder and as a child visited my mom at work when she was teaching reading at Bixby with Pat, Bart, Mark and other early Bixby pioneers. As a young child, I remember the treehouse feeling of the building, the warmth of the community, and a sense of a love of learning among the students. Now as a parent of a Bixby alumni and a current 5th grader, there is no question that the Bixby magic I felt as a child remains today. I run The Center for Authentic Community Engagement where I support organizations and individuals to engage the wisdom of community partners in their work. When not at Bixby or working, I spend my time learning creating nature-infused gifts to share with others, hanging out with my family and friends, and watching our backyard chickens find treats under the soil.

Rachel Flax-Kaplan

Job Titles:
  • Board Secretary / Trustee since 2023
I was born and raised in Albuquerque (ages 0-18), but I like to say that I grew up in NYC (age 18 on up). I studied Art History at Columbia University and my first career was in NYC photography galleries and museums. Eventually, I found myself more fulfilled from my side gig as a youth diving coach, so I shifted my focus to education. I earned my M.S. Ed in Museum Education with K-6 and early childhood certifications from Bank Street College of Education. While in graduate school and subsequently, I was an administrator and head teacher at the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development, a lab school in the Psychology Department of Barnard College. I moved from NYC to Boulder with my husband and twins (now in 2nd grade at Bixby) in 2017. I started teaching toddlers and preschoolers at Snow Lion School in 2018, and in 2022 I became Director. (The school is now known as Snow Lion Preschool.) In addition to teaching in a classroom, I have coached springboard diving for ages six to seventy-six for over two decades. Instructing, encouraging and gently nudging people to do incredible things with their bodies and minds as they hurl themselves into the water from a bouncy fiberglass plank inspires and amazes me to no end!

Stephanie Raessler

Job Titles:
  • Trustee since 2016
I grew up in Cleveland and attended the College of Wooster where I received a BA in International Relations/Economics. After graduation, I worked in Washington D.C. until my husband and I decided to experience life "out west". We packed up and moved to Denver where I completed an MA in Global Finance at the University of Denver, and we loved Colorado so much that we decided to put down roots! I've worked for MarkWest Energy Partners in Denver since 2007, managing the company's credit department which is primarily responsible for evaluating financial risk.
