Gary is an avid supporter of the arts and civic organizations, and currently serves as the treasurer on the board of Northwest Dance Project. Previously, for twenty years Gary was the treasurer of the advisory board of Ikoi No Kai, a senior citizen nutrition and recreation program. Gary is also a subscriber to several stage and dance programs, and frequently attends music concerts and opera. Gary grew up on the Oregon coast, where he often spends his vacations... His university education included Seattle University, the University of Maryland in Europe, and PSU, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1980. He passed the CPA exam in November 1980, beginning his professional career with KPMG Peat Marwick in January 1981.
