As a student of forestry and statistics at the University of Vermont (1986-1989) I mastered mapping skills for landscape and resource management. Following three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador (1990-1994) I achieved a masters degree in geography and geographic information systems at the University of Washington (1996-1998). I began doctoral studies at the University of Washington in 2001 achieved candidate status in 2002... The majority of my work employs the Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) ArcGIS software suite. It is the choice of many institutions and organizations and I've been using it since 2000. The only thing better than knowing a tool's strengths is knowing its weaknesses. Since 2004 I've been using the Python programming language to overcome limitations and constraints creating new tools that automate data management, analysis, modeling and product production.
