BARRY A. SPEVACK

Barry A. Spevack concentrates his practice in federal and state criminal and civil appeals. He graduated first in his class and cum laude from Loyola University of Chicago Law School in 1978, where he was awarded the Chief Justice Edward R. White Scholarship Award and the Loyola University Leadership and Service Award. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Loyola University Law Journal and a member of the school's Trial Practice Team. Mr. Spevack is the co-author of Federal Criminal Law: A Seventh Circuit Handbook (Lexis-Nexis Publishing), a 1000 page compendium of the criminal law as interpreted by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals; updated yearly, the 2013 edition is now available. Mr. Spevack taught for many years as an Adjunct Professor at Loyola University Chicago Law School and he has authored or co-authored numerous articles on criminal law and procedure. Since 2009, Mr. Spevack has been Chair of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association's Rules and Practice Committee. Jacqueline S. Jacobson

Jacqueline S. Jacobson is a former Senior Enforcement Attorney at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission's Midwest Regional Office. She joined Monico & Spevack in 1996 and has more than 15 years of criminal and civil litigation experience. Jacqueline focuses her practice on complex white collar litigation, and has represented clients in all phases of state and federal proceedings. As an SEC Senior Enforcement Attorney, Jacqueline investigated and prosecuted complex and high-profile securities fraud cases. In 1995, Jacqueline received the Manuel F. Cohen award for legal excellence, one of the SEC's highest honors. Jacqueline also served as a staff attorney for the United States Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, where she wrote significant legal opinions for several of the Court's judges. At Monico & Spevack, Jacqueline continues her work in the area of securities-related offenses and regulatory enforcement, in addition to other white collar criminal defense matters, including health care fraud, mortgage and banking fraud, public corruption, trade secrets, import/export violations, tax and accounting fraud cases, RICO violations, perjury/false statements, as well as related mail and wire frauds. Jacqueline represents individuals and business executives in all phases of state and federal proceedings, including pre-indictment investigations, grand jury practice, criminal trials, plea negotiations, federal sentencing, and prison placement. Jacqueline has represented individuals in SEC civil enforcement proceedings and criminal securities matters, successfully avoiding SEC and criminal prosecution in insider trading cases involving several high profile individuals. Ms. Jacobson has also represented business executives in federal sentencing proceedings, averting prison time and obtaining favorable sentences, for doctors, lawyers, real estate professionals, and other business executives. MICHAEL D. MONICO

Michael D. Monico is recognized as one of the premier criminal defense attorneys in the country, representing individuals and corporations in high profile federal criminal and regulatory cases. Mr. Monico began his career as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 1973 through 1977. During this time, Mr. Monico served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (Captain, U.S. Army Reserves, 1975-79). Over the last thirty-five years, Mr. Monico has represented clients in white collar, health care fraud, antitrust, public corruption, mail, wire and securities fraud, and foreign corrupt practices investigations throughout the United States and around the globe. Named as one of "The Best Lawyers in America" from 1991 to the present, among his many honors, Mr. Monico has served as past President of the American Board of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He recently completed service as the President of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association and he co-authors the only treatise on federal criminal law in the Seventh Circuit, entitled Federal Criminal Practice: A Seventh Circuit Handbook, now in its thirteenth edition. He has also published a number of articles on criminal law and is a chapter author in Your Witness: Lessons on Cross Examination. Mr. Monico has been involved in many notable cases. Recent clients include a former cabinet member under President George W. Bush, executives of a major oil company, and officials in multi-national corporations doing business in Europe, China, Japan and the Middle East. His many victories include the directed finding of acquittal at the conclusion of a ten week trial of a pharmaceutical company executive in a major Medicare fraud prosecution in Boston federal court, three acquittals in antitrust prosecutions in Kansas City, Peoria, and Chicago, and an acquittal of one of the only two lawyers acquitted in the Operation Greylord prosecution that targeted corrupt judges and lawyers in Chicago. Mr. Monico regularly speaks at seminars on trial advocacy and criminal justice issues throughout the country and has taught trial advocacy at NITA as well as at Chicago area law schools. He has received a number of awards for his expertise in criminal law and trial advocacy. Ryan W. Mitsos

Ryan W. Mitsos is an associate at Monico & Spevack. Since joining the firm, Ryan has assisted clients in a variety of criminal matters in both federal and state courts. Ryan graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English. He earned his Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law in 2019. During law school, Ryan served as a 711 law clerk at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Traffic Division, and as a judicial extern for former United States District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan in the Northern District of Illinois.
