Cathleen Johnson earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Virginia Tech in 2000, worked for Kollmorgan (on the prototype for what is now known as the Segway), did a post-doctoral fellowship with Nobel Laureate Vernon Smith in 2001, and contracted with the Canadian government through the non-profit Social Research Demonstration Corporation and CIRANO to do multi-million dollar experimental and field studies on attitudes toward risk. She also directed the experimental economics laboratory at CIRANO, a consortium of universities in Montreal. She worked as academic director for BASIS charter school system. At the University of Arizona, she has been Director of the Office for Economic Education. In the Economics Department, she taught Law & Economics, Microeconomics, Managerial Economics, Experimental Economics, and Basic Principles. She now teaches Experimental Economics in the Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law program, directs the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Network, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Council for Economic Education.

Cheryl L. Matejka serves as Chief Financial Officer for Mercy Health head-quartered in St. Louis, Missouri. In this role, she oversees all finance functions related to Mercy hospitals and clinics. Prior to this role, Cheryl served as CFO for Mercy Health's East region, covering the St. Louis metropolitan and surrounding markets where she provided leadership oversight for financial reporting, operational and capital planning & analysis, decision support and various operational areas. Prior to joining 茄子社区 in 2018, Black directed the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education and was a teaching professor of economics at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Prior to joining UMSL, he was an associate professor of economics at Indiana University South Bend. In 2002 he was visiting professor at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Dr. Black has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses, including introductory macroeconomics; introductory microeconomics; labor economics; energy; economics and the environment; and a survey of economics. His research focuses on the economics of science and innovation, local and regional economic issues, and economic education. He has contributed to research funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, the South African Revenue Service, and the United States Agency for International Development. He is the author of the book, The Geography of Small Firm Innovation, and his research has been the focus of articles in diverse publications, including Economic Inquiry, Research Policy, Economic Development Quarterly, Science and Public Policy, and Growth and Change. He began his career as a software engineer for one of the leading providers of engineering analysis tools for the electric utility industry. He then founded and was CEO of two successful software businesses, GridLogix and Gentry Systems. After exiting GridLogix, Gentry was a Partner in Capital Innovators, SixThirty FinTech and Prosper venture funds that provided investment and accelerator programs for early stage tech companies. These funds have now invested globally in more than 200 tech companies. Gentry is currently Chairman of Denim Social, a St. Louis based social media management company for the banking and financial services industry. Lashanda R. Barnes is a servant leader and Senior Vice President and Compliance Business Control Manager for Client Experience at Citi in O鈥橣allon, MO. She previously Co-chaired Citi鈥檚 African Heritage Employee Network and presently leads the Divine Nine (D9) Collaborative at Citi. Citi has recognized Lashanda鈥檚 efforts by honoring her with Citi鈥檚 Quality Excellence, Stars, Pride, Community and Team awards. A native of St. Louis, Lashanda earned a Bachelor鈥檚 of Organizational Studies and a Master鈥檚 of Management from Fontbonne University in Clayton, MO. In the community, Ms. Barnes currently serves on the boards of St. Louis Children鈥檚 Hospital and Social Ventures Partners (SVP). Additionally, she is an active member of the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., co-chairs the Regional Business Council鈥檚 Young Professional鈥檚 Network and serves as Lead Volunteer for the non-profit Eye Thrive. The community has recognized Lashanda with the St. Louis Business Journal鈥檚 Diverse Leader and St. Louis American Young Leader awards and distinction within the RBC鈥檚 Leadership 100. In 2022, she became an international best-selling author for her contribution to Overcoming: Living Our Life in Spite of鈥�, an anthology of all-female authors. On a personal note, Lashanda values people over possessions, time over tangibles, faith, family, music, and traveling.

Laura Taylor

Laura Taylor manages executive media relations at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, part of the Federal Reserve System. In her role, she works directly with media organizations and journalists around the world to promote and explain the St. Louis Fed鈥檚 monetary policy positions. Prior to working at the Federal Reserve, Laura spent time working in government and political communications. Her time in Congress greatly informed her desire to dedicate her career to public service. She鈥檚 also served as a director in the Illinois Lt. Governor鈥檚 office and as a director at the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association. Laura received her bachelor鈥檚 degree in journalism and master鈥檚 degree in media management and political communication, both from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.聽 Originally from southern Illinois, Laura currently resides in St. Louis with her husband Andrew and two daughters Ellie and Charlotte.

I received my Master's in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign iSchool in 2019. I am the project manager for the Library's internship program and enjoy helping students earn professional experience as they work toward graduation. Supporting students, faculty, staff, and the entire 茄子社区 community is the heart behind my work. I read across many genres and enjoy recommending books to others. I read a lot of audiobooks and have a goal each year to finish at least 50 books. I am a sports fan who follows baseball and hockey consistently.听

Mark Falkowski - Chief Legal Officer

Mark Falkowski brings to 茄子社区 extensive experience as a higher education attorney, including previously both in private practice as a member of the higher education practice group for a large national law firm and as in-house and general counsel. He has successfully represented numerous colleges and universities in state and federal courts and in various administrative agency proceedings, including with the United States Department of Education. His legal experience supports all areas of University operations and helps ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations applicable to University operations including the ACA, ADA/Section 504, the Clery Act, COBRA, ERISA, FERPA, FLSA, FMLA, HIPAA, Title IV, Title VI, Title VII, and Title IX. He provides day-to-day legal advice to University departments on matters of legal significance and is also responsible for managing outside counsel.

Orrie Covert has approximately 20 years of experience in higher education, the majority of which have been in senior leadership positions. He has held positions at Syracuse University, Northwest Missouri State, the University of Florida at Gainesville, the University of Missouri, and most recently the University of Texas at Tyler, where he served as vice president for advancement for two years. He has been a part of numerous successful fundraising initiatives, including billion-dollar capital campaigns at the University of Missouri and the University of Florida, respectively, and realized the largest cash gift, $2.1 million, in the history of Northwest Missouri State. As vice president for advancement and community engagement, he manages the development and alumni functions of the university.

Patricia Penkoske

茄子社区 University alumna Patricia Penkoske (鈥�69) joined the Board of Trustees in 2012. She is a longtime critical care physician who remains involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows at Barnes Jewish Hospital. Dr. Penkoske moved to St. Charles during her high school years and attended 茄子社区 College when it was transitioning to coed. Summer jobs in a research lab exposed her to research and medicine. She graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1974. Further training included general surgery and cardiac surgery. Penkoske was a practicing pediatric cardiac surgeon, researcher, and residency program director for 16 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and for two years at Saint Louis University. In 2005, she joined the faculty at Washington University. The mother of three daughters, Penkoske lives in the Central West End and enjoys participation on several boards, sports, and travel.

Dr. Harty is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the College of Science, Technology, and Health. He holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from Texas Tech University as well as a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Exercise Science and a master鈥檚 degree in Human Performance from 茄子社区 University. His research interests include aspects of sport science, sports nutrition, and body composition. Dr. Harty's recent work examines the applicability of 3D body scanning technologies to serve as performance prediction metrics in Soldiers. In addition to research, he teaches classes at the undergraduate and graduate level and enjoys working with students at all stages of their academic journeys.

Certified as a lecturer by The Ministry of Education, Yoshi is an active instructor for the National Center for Teacher Training, Yoshi's experience includes time as President and Chief Operating Officer for JA Japan; a position that is certified by the government as a Public-interest Incorporated Association. He launched the Japan Council on Economic Education and signed a memorandum of understanding for partnership operations, with the National Council on Economic Education. Yoshi entered the educational sector in attempt to introduce experience-based teaching methods, into the Japanese society. He obtained the international affiliate license from Junior Achievement Worldwide and invested his personal money to launch Junior Achievement Japan from scratch.
