[It would not be long] ere the whole surface of this country would be channelled for those nerves which are to diffuse, with the speed of thought, a knowledge of all that is occurring throughout the land, making, in fact, one neighborhood of the whole country... Samuel F.B. Morse's invention of the electric telegraph in 1837 was a revolutionary invention because it made long-distance communication faster and more efficient, creating a more united nation. As time progressed, people felt the need for reform movements that would allow them to communicate easier, further, and faster, resulting in reform movements such as new laws and inventions.
