Alex Johns

Alex Johns is the chief mastering engineer at Binary Mastering. Johns has been engineering professionally since 2003. He holds a B.S. in Music Industry Studies from Appalachian State University, with a concentration in Recording/Production, and Percussion. Alex was an audio engineer/producer, and studio technician at Charles Holloman Productions in Charlotte, NC for over 4 years. While at CHP, Alex engineered and produced a wide variety of projects including TV/radio broadcast commercials, Post-Production audio for video, music recording/mixing/mastering, telephone on-hold message production, voiceover recordings, digitization and audio restoration, and more. In more recent years, he has been working more in live event production; working with the Historic Alabama Theatre, Lyric Theatre, and the Wright Fine Arts Center as a FOH and monitor engineer. Alex is currently the technical director at Grace, a United Methodist Congregation, where he has overseen all audio, video, lighting, and technology for over 5 years. Johns was previously the Lead Audio Engineer for PSAV at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, where he built and operated audio visual systems for events with up to 8000 people in attendance. Alex got his start in music at a young age, learning violin at age 6. "I grew up in a musical family, my mother is a violin/orchestra teacher, my dad sings in the church choir, and my siblings are also string players and teach music. Music is in my blood, and will always be a big part of who I am." He continued to expand musically as he grew up, studying piano, string bass, and eventually drum set and percussion. At Appalachian State University, he studied a wide array of percussion with Dr. Robert Falvo, including drum set, keyboard percussion (vibes, xylophone, marimba), timpani, tabla, and general percussion performance. Alex has performed in Carnegie Hall, and has played with several orchestras and musical groups in North Carolina over the years. He actively performs in the Birmingham based duo "Relative", and as a freelance drummer/percussionist.
