CANINES IN EDUCATION

Canines in Education is a service provided to students with special needs. It began in 2005, as a volunteer service provided by Ann Putegnat during her years as a special needs counselor in an NISD high school. For two years, Ann and her certified canines have gone from school to school, assisting teachers and students alike. Unlike traditional "canine therapy", the service that Ann provides is much more akin to teaching, using a dog to motivate the students. Her background as a special educator allows her to enter any classroom and design a lesson on the spot that meets IEP objectives... Welcome to a new experience in learning for developmentally and emotionally challenged individuals. This unique program uses canines to facilitate education, communication and social skill development.
