Cécile Péraire

Cécile Péraire has more than 25 years of software engineering experience working in both industry and academia. She earned her Ph.D. in computer science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland). Following a postdoctoral research fellowship at SRI International and Hewlett Packard, she worked at Rational and IBM where she played different roles covering the many facets of software development. She has contributed significantly to the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and IBM's internal methods. Péraire is a teaching professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). She is a recipient of CMU College of Engineering Dean's Early Career Fellowship Award, as well as CMU College of Engineering Philip L. Dowd Fellowship Award for her contribution to the development of ECE's unique and distinctive Software Engineering Master Opens in new window program offered in Silicon Valley, California. She has published and taught extensively in her areas of specialization. Gladys M. Mercier has 12 years of software engineering experience, with a focus on industrial automation systems for steel manufacturing. She has been a certified professional project manager (PMP) since 2002, and has served in a variety of roles throughout her career, including analyst, developer, designer, architect, tester, trainer, and team lead. Mercier joined Carnegie Mellon in Silicon Valley in 2003, and has played an instrumental role in the growth and success of the M.S. in Software Management (MSSM) program. Mercier grew up in Sacramento, California, and attended college in Boston and Pittsburgh. After earning her undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh, she launched her software career in the city's steel manufacturing industry. Her work allowed her to travel extensively, installing systems in many cities in the U.S. and Brazil. Mercier has been a part of the CMU community for nearly 20 years. After earning her master's degree at CMU, she developed and taught a project management course for Heinz College. When she moved back to California, she continued her CMU career by joining the Silicon Valley campus. Mercier spends her free time both outside and on the ice. She studies landscape architecture, urban design, and California native plants. Her favorite pastime is playing ice hockey, traveling across the U.S. as part of winning teams and leagues. After living in Pittsburgh for 16 years (and during the Mario Lemieux era), she continues to be a devoted Pittsburgh Penguins fan, despite the cheers of her San Jose Sharks-loving neighbors.

Hakan Erdogmus

Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon University, Hakan Erdogmus was an independent consultant based in Ottawa, Canada, specializing in software engineering methods, engineering economics, process improvement, and software measurement and quality. He has published and presented extensively in these areas. From January 1995 to June 2009, he worked for the Canadian National Research Council's Institute for Information Technology, where he was a senior research officer in the Software Engineering Group. Erdogmus is a past editor in chief of IEEE Software and a current associate editor of the Journal of Empirical Software Engineering. He held an Erasmus Mundus visiting scholarship, a position funded by the European Union, at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. Erdogmus is co-editor of two volumes, Advances in Software Engineering: Comprehension, Evaluation and Evolution and Value-Based Software Engineering, both published by Springer. He is a founding faculty member of ECE's M.S. in Software Engineering Program. Since 2018, Erdogmus has been serving on ECE's Silicon Valley Strategy Committee as its academic lead and lead for the Software Engineering Program. Erdogmus received his Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications from INRS-Université du Québec (Montreal), his M.Sc. degree from McGill University's School of Computer Science (Montreal), and his B.Sc. degree from Boğaziçi University's Computer Engineering Department (Istanbul). He is a Senior Member of IEEE, a Golden Core member of IEEE Computer Society, and a member of ACM. From 2010 to 2014 he served on Computer Society's Board of Governors as an elected member. John Paul Shen

John Paul Shen was a Nokia Fellow and the founding director of Nokia Research Center - North America Lab. NRC-NAL had research teams pursuing a wide range of research projects in mobile Internet and mobile computing. In six years (2007-2012), NRC-NAL filed over 100 patents, published over 200 papers, hosted about 100 Ph.D. interns, and collaborated with a dozen universities. Prior to joining Nokia in late 2006, John was the director of the Microarchitecture Research Lab at Intel. MRL had research teams in Santa Clara, Portland, and Austin, pursuing research on aggressive ILP and TLP microarchitectures for IA32 and IA64 processors. Prior to joining Intel in 2000, John was a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he supervised a total of 17 Ph.D. students and dozens of M.S. students, received multiple teaching awards, and published two books and more than 100 research papers. One of his books, Modern Processor Design: Fundamentals of Superscalar Processors, was used in the EE382A Advanced Processor Architecture course at Stanford, where he co-taught the EE382A course. After spending 15 years in industry, all in Silicon Valley, he returned to Carnegie Mellon in the fall of 2015 as a tenured full professor in the ECE Department and is based at the Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley campus. Shen's broad technical expertise encompasses computer architecture and processor design, mobile and ubiquitous computing, mobile sensing and user behavior modeling, web-based software systems and services, wireless based cloud computing infrastructure, and power and energy efficient supercomputing. Larry Pileggi is the Tanoto Professor and Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and has previously held positions at Westinghouse Research and Development and the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon in 1989. He has consulted for various semiconductor and EDA companies, and was co-founder of Fabbrix Inc. (acquired by PDF Solutions) and Extreme DA (acquired by Synopsys). His research interests include various aspects of digital and analog integrated circuit design, and design methodologies. He has received various awards, including Westinghouse corporation's highest engineering achievement award; a Presidential Young Investigator award from the National Science Foundation; Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Technical Excellence Awards in 1991 and 1999; the FCRP inaugural Richard A. Her book Roots and Wings - Inspiring stories of Indian Engineering Women Opens in new window was published in 2018. She co-authored Demystifying AI for The Enterprise Opens in new window, published in 2021. Most recently, she authored a book on leadership titled Leadership Lessons With The Beatles Opens in new window, published in 2022, with a German translation published also in 2022 and an Indian edition published in 2024.

Based at Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley, Sheryl Root is an associate professor of the practice for the M.S. in Software Management program. In her role as faculty, Root both develops curriculum and teaches courses that merge technology with entrepreneurship. Outside of Carnegie Mellon, Root is the owner of RootAnalysis, a consulting firm specializing in corporate strategy and marketing. For more than 13 years, her firm has worked with C-level Silicon Valley executives at high-tech companies, such as HP-Compaq, Oracle/PeopleSoft, Hyperion, Philips, Novell, and many startup organizations. Prior to joining academia, Root had an extensive career in the software industry, including a 20-year tenure working for Hewlett-Packard (HP). While at HP, she excelled in a number of roles, including director of business strategy, director of marketing operations for services, director of the software initiative, and manager of Unix environments. Specializing in the area of software, she led internal teams of consultants for HP operations across the globe, advancing the company's process practices in software engineering and business management. Root is a leader, board member, and advocate for many world-renowned institutes and organizations. She is chairman of the Advisory Board for Women in Technology International (WITI), a member of the Board of Advisors for the Stanford Business School Sloan Program, and board member of Netswitch Technology Management. She has coached numerous startups to achieve success in high-tech industries. Additionally, she is a frequent speaker in high-tech subject areas such as agile marketing, strategy, women in STEM, career planning, leadership, new business models, and organizational structures. Outside of work, Root is a connoisseur of wines and previously owned her own vineyard. In a previous life, she used to race cars.

From student enrollment data to special projects (and just about everything in between), she's a go-to collaborator for all things processes, spreadsheets, and the "can you help with this?" moments that help make a campus run. Stephanie Caruso is a seasoned student affairs professional with over a decade of experience supporting graduate students across academic advising, student engagement, and operations. She began her career in course and enrollment management, supporting faculty and advising student organizations, before transitioning into academic advising, where she helped students align their academic choices with their goals and values. At Yale University, she served as Assistant Director of Student Affairs, working closely with student organizations and councils to plan events, navigate challenges, and build inclusive communities. Returning to CMU-Silicon Valley, she served as Associate Director of Student Affairs, leading efforts in enrollment systems, student support, onboarding, and cross-campus collaboration. Now in her role as Student Affairs Consultant, she focuses on student data strategy and process design. Stephanie holds a B.S. in Kinesiology and an M.Ed. in Student Affairs Administration. She is known for her calm clarity, strategic execution, and ability to make even the most complex systems feel simple and student-centered.

Steven Rosenberg

Steven Rosenberg is currently senior director of operations of Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley campus. He was previously the associate director of the campus, as well as associate director for planning and technology incubation, Disaster Management Initiative, and a visiting scientist in the Cylab Mobility Research Center. Before coming to Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley Rosenberg worked for many years at HP Labs, most recently as associate director in the technology transfer office, where he was responsible for developing technology incubations. At HP Labs he led the development of a novel cloud-based service, new computer input devices, enterprise workflow solutions, disk drive optimization tools, and solutions for enterprise and commercial printing. Earlier, he ran HP Labs' first university research program. Rosenberg created HP Labs "science centers" at Stanford, UC Berkeley, and MIT, and numerous other successful university research partnerships. He also developed HP Labs' first research program with Chinese universities, and established the HP Labs research subsidiary in Israel. As a research manager at HP Labs, he led the creation of an expert systems language and tool kit used within HP and at several leading universities. Expert system solutions he developed for HP included photolithography error diagnosis, computer configuration tools, a best in class mass spectroscopy analysis tool, and the gold standard (at the time) handwriting recognition system. Prior to HP, at the Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Department of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley, Rosenberg developed tools for visualizing the distribution systems for energy resources in the U.S. and understanding the impact of disruptions to the US energy distribution grid. As a member of M.I.T.'s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, he engaged in research on computational linguistics, reasoning and knowledge representation. Rosenberg has been on the advisory boards for the Computer Science Departments of UCLA and the University of Pennsylvania. He has also been a consultant to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), ActivNetworks, Apple, and the Internet Archive. He holds a B.S. with First Class Honors from McGillUniversity, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. He has over 35 publications, and eleven patents granted.

Stuart Evans is a board member, educator, author, and expert on dynamic high-tech ventures. As a distinguished service professor, he shares his expertise by teaching related coursework for our degree programs in Silicon Valley, M.S. in Software Management and M.S. Technology Ventures. Additionally, Evans is the director of the CMU-Emirates iLab, a partnership between Carnegie Mellon's Integrated Innovation Instititue (III) and Emirates Airlines for innovative education and research specialized for the airline industry. Evans' professional career spans across many areas of entrepreneurship, featuring extensive experience within the tech ecosystem of Silicon Valley. He has conducted research for SRI International and Stanford Graduate School of Business; consulted with Bain and Company; worked in investing for Sand Hill Venture Group; and served as executive management for Shugart Corporation, a Xerox subsidiary. Prior to his time in Silicon Valley, he taught at Cambridge University's Judge Business School.

Timothy Morey

Timothy Morey is a leader in product strategy, innovation, and design. Throughout his career, he has worked with public and pre-IPO companies across retail, automotive, consumer, healthcare, and technology sectors to bring new products and services to market. Currently he is the global head of Method Opens in new window, a digital product consultancy that is part of GlobalLogic and Hitachi, where he leads a team of 300 engineers, product managers, and designers. Prior to joining Method, Morey led frog design, a global creative consultancy. Morey regularly speaks on innovation, strategy, and design and his frameworks have been published in strategy and business publications including Harvard Business Review.

William H. Sanders

William H. Sanders is the Dr. William D. and Nancy W. Strecker Dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and a professor of electrical and computer engineering, of computer science, and in the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. He is a leader in engineering research and academia, a well-respected collaborator in higher education who builds strategic public-private partnerships. Sanders previously served as the Herman M. Dieckamp Endowed Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the interim director of the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) in the University of Illinois System where he led the joint education, research, and innovation institute in its efforts to drive technology-based economic growth. Backed by a $500 million appropriation from the state and more than $400 million in private funding, DPI spans three universities and includes eight other academic partners. Before coming to CMU, Sanders spent 25 as a tenured professor at Illinois in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. His research interests include secure and dependable computing and security, as well as resiliency metrics and evaluation, with a focus on critical infrastructures. He has published more than 300 technical papers in those areas. Sanders has also directed work at the forefront of national efforts to make the U.S. power grid smart and resilient. Beyond his significant scholarly record, he was the founding director of the University of Illinois' Information Trust Institute in 2004, growing its faculty to more than 100 and attracting $80 million in external research funding by 2011. Sanders then served as director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory from 2010-2014 and was head of the university's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2014-2018. He also co-founded the Advanced Digital Sciences Center in Singapore in 2009, which is Illinois' first international research facility. Sanders earned his bachelor's degree in computer engineering; master's degree in computer, information, and control engineering; and doctoral degree in computer science and engineering, all from the University of Michigan. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Engineers (NAE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His awards include the 2016 IEEE Technical Field Award, Innovation in Societal Infrastructure, for "assessment-driven design of trustworthy cyber infrastructures for societal-scale systems." Sanders is also an entrepreneur and the co-founder of Network Perception Inc. Bill Sanders is installed as the inaugural holder of the Dr. William D. and Nancy W.
