MaryAnn grew up in country Queensland. Her early childhood was spent on a sheep and cattle property on the Warrego River, between the towns of Charleville and Cunamulla. She went to boarding school at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School when she was in year five, and then boarded at The Glennie School in Toowoomba before finishing her schooling at Dalby State High School, where she was the vice captain of the school in year 12.
