EIUK - Key Persons

Alison Smailes

Alison joined the EIUK board in 2024. She has had the privilege of going to Tanzania with EI on three occasions, being part of her church's short term mission teams in 2017, 2019 and 2023. In 2024, Alison had the opportunity to return to Tanzania and see the considerable impact that EI projects are having on the lives of people in their schools, villages and communities. Alison qualified as a social worker in the 1990s, and has spent the last three decades as both a practitioner and a leader in statutory children's social work and the criminal justice system. She is keen to support and promote EI's work in partnering with local churches linking with their communities to serve those in need.

Andy Sharpe

Andy was elected to the Board at the 2023 AGM. Andy and his wife Angela went to work in Iringa, Tanzania with EI in 2010. In the 6 years living there Andy oversaw various village water supply projects and school rainwater harvesting projects. Angela taught English at the Anglican bible school. Since returning to the UK, Andy has continued EI support work seeking funding for projects and making regular visits back to Iringa with Angela to support the staff there. He is happy to continue his support for the work of EI by serving on the board, and loves to encourage Christians to show God's love in service to others, wherever that may be.

Bernard Lane

Bernard was elected to the Board at the 2012 AGM. He went to EI Training School in 1982 and spent one of the most formative years of his life in Brasil in 1983 on a team in Passabem, lead by Fred Silva. EI was ‘putting feet on the Gospel' taking the good news to the poor and helping communities to improve their situation. He later returned to Brasil in 1991 for a further 7.5 years working with SAMS, working in churches in the South. Since then, he has returned to Brasil with EI to help with short term summer teams. He is pleased to be involved in EI's ministry on the Board and look forward to working with colleagues to help the Church help the poor.

Clive Tydeman

Clive was elected to the Board at the 2009 AGM and became Chairman of the EIUK Board in 2017. He first worked with EI in 1997 with a two year stint in Malawi working on a relief and development programme. More recently, Clive was Country Director for the Fellowship for African Relief in Sudan, a partner of EI. He has thoroughly enjoyed these experiences with EI and in joining the Board would like to give others the same experiences and opportunities.

John Raby

John was elected to the Board at the 2019 AGM. John is a chartered accountant who worked in industry and has spent 30 years of his life in church leadership. He and his wife, Christine, have always had a keen interest in missions and after retirement, spent 2 years in Malawi with EI in 2013 to 2015. He acted as Grants Manager while Christine was working as a part-time doctor in Zomba General Hospital. He also has holds other trustee appointments including, in the literature ministry, CLC International Office. John would like to see others using their skills to serve God in retirement and is delighted to be able to continue serving EI as a trustee.
