Fetlar lies South of Unst and to the East of Yell and together the three islands make up the North Isles of Shetland. Fetlar is known as the "Garden of Shetland" due to it being far the greenest of the islands. Indeed, the name Fetlar is reputed to originate from the Viking term "Fat Land", further strengthening the island's claim to be fertile area suitable for crops. Historically, many crops were grown on the island, particularly bere, but today most of the land is used for grazing livestock, both sheep and cattle... Our aim is to provide you with an interesting and informative experience, letting you learn more about our island and, hopefully, encouraging you to visit us on holiday or perhaps even re-locate here... Welcome to the Shetland island Fetlar. A place of abundant wildlife, stunning scenery and a small but very friendly community. We hope you'll visit us on holiday, or even consider re-locating to our peaceful, natural isle.
