John was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. He graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Biological Chemistry, received his DDS from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco and finished with his MS degree in Periodontics at the University of Washington in Seattle in June of 2010. Thereafter, John joined the periodontal practice of his father, John C. "Jack" Remien, who, after 40 years of practice, retired in March of 2012.
