SARAH'S REFUGE

In 1993, the community of Duplin County became aware of the need for a battered women's shelter; a task force was formed of several Duplin County residents along with a paralegal from New Hanover County. The task force decided to name the program, Sarah's Refuge, after the paralegal shared the story of her grandmother, Sarah, who sheltered battered women and their children in her private home. Immediately, a Board of Directors was formed and officers elected... Today, Sarah's Refuge, Inc. operates the only residential and non-residential domestic violence and rape crisis center in Duplin County, North Carolina. The program is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Trained staff are available to respond to crisis calls on the agency's 24-hour crisis line, and to provide crisis intervention, individual and group support, advocacy, information, education and referrals to victims of domestic and sexual violence.
