The Alaska 200 Club is a membership of individuals who have identified 200 or more wild, alive, and unrestrained bird species in Alaska. Members are entitled to wear the Alaska 200 Club emblem, which portrays the Steller's Jay, new to ornithology in July, 1741 when discovered at Kayak Island (in Southcoastal Alaska) by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller. Shown in the background is the vessel St. Peter, upon which the great Danish explorer Vitus Bering and his naturalist Steller, reached Alaska. Steller was convinced by the presence of this bird that he was indeed in the New World. The Steller's Jay thus became the first bird on the Alaska bird list.
